I've used Shopify, Magento, and WooCommerce in many different settings, I would gladly recognise them all. Cost of production is always going to be higher with Magento, I've always felt that if you have the resources, manpower, and money to throw at maintaining and up-keeping a fully fledged Magento site, why not go for it?

I personally enjoyed using WooCommerce, it had great amount of flexibility, and the community support is good. My old eCommerce developer was more keen on providing these easy to manage, custom Shopify designs, carts, and more to a broader range of businesses. As such, I always like to think of these platforms in relation to scaling; if the business is growing, choose a platform that will best suit it. The cost of each will reflect that too, trust me!

Magento can be quite easily managed, once running, from the back-end of the site, but you're likely to run into difficulties once the store needs more functions. Hosted sites, in my personal view, have the greatest amount of support and can probably be the most effective if you want to focus on making those sales.

    Hey,
I think you should go with opencart or prestashop. Magento is a great platform but it is not a good choice for starters because its heavy and hard to update and maintain. About Woocommerce - I see some wordpress fans here but you should think about security of your webshop too ... and woocoommerce is not a good choice in terms of that.

WP+woo is no less secure than any other platform if you do things properly. Problems occur because people don't follow the guidelines on securing a website

Maybe you are right... I am talking from experience and not all people update on time.... so if you forget to update your wordpress or woocommerce on time there is a very good chance getting hacks even if you have secured your site with plugins and etc.. i think its not like that for opencart for example ...

It's exactly the same with any platform (not just ecommerce). If you don't update you are vunerable.

    Hello,

Looking to get some input which platform to choose for e-commerce.

    1. Do you use hosted or self-hosted solution?
    2. Which e-commerce platform you use?
    3. Would you choose the same platform again?
    4. What was the total cost of production?
    5. What's your overall experience so far?

I've developed 75-100 eCommerce solutions for clients, and for myself.

    1. Hosted
    2. Magento Community
    3. Every time
    4. I have a bank of outsourcers (people usually worry about outsourcers, but i've gone through so many) who will develop fantastic Magento functionality for between £750-£2000 from a theme (such as Fortis, or Ultimo (or many more) on themeforest)
    5. I understand Magento inside out, I can develop it also, but the time it takes and the resource required is huge compared to just passing it to an outsourcer who I already trust and have done plenty of work with in the past.

If you're after a hosted e-commerce solution have a look at ekmPowershop.

We're paying £25 a month for unlimited products and whilst some of the features are a little dated (appearance of shopping cart and customer log in) on the whole for what you pay it is a very good service.
