Hi everybody (as Dr. Nick says).

I recently started a Danish website, using PrestaShop. I have also tried Magento and Drupal Commerce/Übercart, but i definately preferred PrestaShop, despite the fact that I am used to using Drupal.

But what do you people think?

I take it from those mentioned you want free.

We have used Prestashop on a number of occasions and had no problems, we have recommended it to a number of our customers, for lower budget ecommerce solutions.

If you are already using it, I can see no reason to change, assuming there are suitable payment modules for where you trade.

Thanks

Which is the best car for driving?
Which is the best bed for sleeping?

There is no best CMS for e-commerce. There are just different platforms each of which has different components. Choose the one that best suits your business model. If it means paying for it then do so.

I must admit I fell out with Prestashop after we got called in to debug a site and the errors were in some php that we being run through eval.

1. That makes debugging a real PITA

2. Its just plain silly

That said if your is all working fine then why bother changing now?

For people setting out, OpenCart is one I would recommend over Prestashop.

Generally though the best option for most people is Magento. Exception are the real low budget end or very very large sites with hundreds of thousands of products.

I think there is common problem when choosing open source platforms. Generally the best in the long term feels the least approachable initially. We use Magento, it's hard work sometimes but for the 99% of time we aren't working on it and it is just sat there, selling, it performs well as it's so flexible.

That said we had 4 years of eCommerce across various CMS under our belts before we switched to Magento. If we had used it from day one, I would quite possibly have given up within a week!

I looked at Prestashop briefly and was put off due to the problems reported when trying to expand it's functionality. For most users the standard functions are fine so this is never an issue of course.

I think there is prevalent issue when selecting free systems. Usually the best in the future seems the least friendly at first. We use Magento, it's effort sometimes but for the 99% of your time we aren't functioning on it and it is just sat there, promoting, it works well as it's so versatile.

It all depends on your business requirements (as per)
What features do you need ? , do you need it to fit into a social media platform ?
How easily does it comply with all the things you need to be Google friendly?
How well does it look on a mobile device?
How much customisation do you require ?

Until you can reasonably answer some of those questions - then you wont really know which is the best one to use for you.

Magento - a very steep learning curve for the beginner, Prestashop - still a no, still has issues with the variable combi generator last time I checked

ps You also need to make sure that product you decide will convert to sales. A convoluted and confusing site could have an ecommerce platform from NASA but it still wont convert as well as an easy to use familiar site.
