Which do you prefer?

Hello all.

I've modified the following 2 sites, to show different search bars, ones massive, the other is small, which do you prefer please?

For me it's got to be large, the search button needs tidying up though as you have white border which would be better if removed.

I can't decided I'm afraid! The small one looks tidier (though would look nicer if positioned better), however I'm assuming the sites goal is for the user to subscribe to more magazines, in which the large search box does make you want to 'search more'.

The larger one is a better call to action but I have a personal dislike of the oversized text box look (plus in IE6 the textbox/ inputed text isnt working correctly) - something between the two

Large - all the way. 'Chunky' looking sites are becoming very trendy.

Large is good but the text size/positioning inside the box needs working on as it chops the bottom off, lowercase g's for example.

I'll have to go with MH-Nick, its hard to decide between the two; but then again, your magazine list is very very long and diverse, so most visitors will use the search unless they know exactly what they are looking for.

Think about the websites customers.

From a marketing perspective, have you considered split testing the design?

Small for me but I'd change the whole search concept. You need to be able to search by genre and title. Do the amazon thing and introduce a drop down for the genre, maybe use smart search (where you offer suggestions). I'd also make the search more prominent, change the colour and styling so that it stands out.
