Hi Everyone

I am so fed up. Please help. I have started a web page and used 2Create a Website as my host but the functions were very limited and I couldn't choose where to put things on my web page etc. So I changed to Yahoo small business and they are not proving very good either. Evertime I update my web page it still shows half of the old one and half of the new one. I also upload a PDF file and linked it to my web page but when you clikc on the link Adobe starts to load and then disappears. There is nothing wrong with my Adobe as I tried it.
Can anyone recommend a cheap and good web host.

Cheers everyone

Chris

There are a few hosting companies represented on these Forums, myself, Matrixx and vshosting to name a few...

I'm not one for self-promotion on forums so don't ask me to!

I'm sure that there are current clients of these companies on here that will advise you better then biased me

Do you need anything specific? (e.g. PHP, ASP, Frontpage Extensions or a script pre-installed)

For hosting, I can highly recommend Phil at OpenMind Hosting. He offers a fantastic service at a great price. He's always quick to respond and extremely helpful if you get into a muddle like I quite often do! Take a look at his site http://www.openmindhosting.co.uk/ for more information.

However, it sounds like you are looking for a web building package as opposed to hosting as you mention having trouble positioning items where you want them.

If this is the case, your best bet would be to invest in some proper web design software such as frontpage or dreamweaver, or alternatively get a web designer to create the site for you. Many now offer content management systems which would allow you to easily update the content of your site yourself.

I should imagine most web building programs that come with hosting plans would be quite limited such as the two you have mentioned. A relative of mine had a site they built through Lycos which was again limited to a template and took an eternity to edit just the smallest area of text.

Hope this helps,

Sarah

Hi

We've been lucky, I guess, that we started our website development with a great company that provides what we believe is an uparalleled 'package' of domain reg., hosting, research, development, optimizing, analysis and web stats, combined with many other useful tools to simplfy the process of building successful websites. (To be fair we have been through the hands of both hopeless, and/or expensive host before this company too - so we know whereof you speak :( )

But now we continue to be amazed at the great deal the company we now use offers for the price. The tech support is great, and the private forum is a goldmine of info for site developers (we've often seen it referred to as priceless and we cannot argue - it has help us in so many ways).

The company is ethically run and the 'head honcho' is a fascinating guy who remains very hands on.

What we should say is be prepared to shift your mindset about 'what a website should be like' in this day and age...It is amazing how much sense the philosophy of this company makes, and we can only say from our experience with them over the last two years...our websites really do work (earn us income...which is what we are building for).

Anyway, here is a link if you want to 'check them out':
http://www.build-better-websites.com

If you REALLY only need 'hosting' then you will no doubt find a cheap deal in many places...BUT...you 'gets what you pays for' and if you really want to develop a website that gets traffic, and actually brings in new business, then we are not aware of a better 'all-in' deal.

Kind regards

Ruth
