Where to get website pictures??

Im currently building a website to sell pet products, and im after some pictures (free or otherwise) to make it look better. (cute pics of puppy / kittens or the like)

Can you recommend any websites that offer pictures to be used to download??

there are free ones (but lower quality)

but i would advice istockphoto.com or fotolia.com (only a few quid a photo.

Yep lots of sites where you can buy piccies from If you want them free just google 'free pictures'

Im happy to pay to get good quality pics as they will be large pictures on most pages.

Use istock.
The free libraries might give you an OK result every now and then, but on the whole they are dire. At least using istock means you know you'll get a result, and you won't waste time.

Yep, I've used istock. It's very easy to find the images you want and you can choose the size of the image file.

Istock is good, but as someone mentioned - they won't be unique and lots of others would have used them aswell.

Hi,
I use istock, and often do get something useable but often I want photos of composers and that is a bit tricky to find.

I also was very particular about my new website wanting just the right subject and colour and bought photos from Getty images and shutterstock too.
Getty were a bit more pricey, but well worth it for what I got.
Shutter stock seemed very good and if you are using a lot it works out very reasonable to buy a subscription.

It looks great, and most of the functionality is nearly there now.

Flickr is also a great shout - I've mailed the owners a few times and struck a deal to licence their pictures.

istockphoto is quite good, others you could try are fotolia and dreamstime.

I registerred with Getty although cannot now remember whether I had toto get the prices, but I am wondering what you were buying. I bought 3 or 4 pics from them, royalty free and it cost me about £125 ish I recall. Which is not a lot extra in relation to the cost of our site.

You can get different resolutions and so forth but as far as I can see they are all legally bought by me for use on our website... and they are great pictures for us which I could not get elsewhere.

SoI am surprised at what you were quoted, and hope you find what you need elsewhere.

did you try the royalty free 123 i mentioned earlier. u just pay for 150 pictures - £60 and some of them free, u can download 5 pictures and some free pictures everyday during one month.

I did try it, but unfortunately couldn't find the image I was after. Eventually got sorted out at fotolia, for the bargain price of £2.40.

Getty own istock. Having two libraries with different pricing strategies is part of their model, which works well. (For them..)

Does anyone know a good place to buy the sort of pics you see in text books... particularly of old and famous composers. I very occasionally find a picture of a statue of a composer on these photo sites, which I can use. But it is very limited. I am looking to illustrate articles about different composers for our newsletter, and I always find other sites about the composers with the photos on, but often cannot get to their source to buy them legally.

That leaves me a very few composers I can write about and illustrate with a picture. I should be choosing the articles to reflect interest and relevance to development in musical thought, not because they are the only ones I can find pictures for!!

Any teachers out there who may be able to help?

Have you asked the British Assoc. of Picture Libraries and Agencies for help?

Another route might be to ask The Gramophone where they source theirs from.

The Brit Museum is no good, (just looked, often a good site..), but the Library of Congress has an amazing library, and I'm sure there must be similar bodies in Europe. Might be worth a go.
