Where to find sewing machinists

Hi,

I'm wondering where a good place is to find industrial sewing machinists (self-employed/work from home)? Any body on here qualified/interested? Experience working with heavy fabrics (PVC tarpaulin and webbing) and owning (or access to) an industrial straight stitch/walking foot would be ideal.

Thanks.

Hi,
I have a workroom but dont sew heavy materials. I am registered on the UK fabric and textile association website. It's a great place to source UK manufacturers and suppliers.
Not sure if I can post a link but if you google UKFT lets make it here. I'm sure you'll find it.
Best of luck and great to hear you're wanting to make something on home shores :)

Yes Matt,
please feel free to message me. there is also fashion alliance which lists companies that manufacture but this is purely fashion.
It is a difficult sector to find experienced staff, you might think this is daft when you see programs like Corrie where any Tom, Dick or Harrry walk into the factory sit down at a machine and start sewing with no thread !!!!!!

I know nothing about the industry but watched a Programme

On bbc one Tuesday night " the town taking on china" second part this Tuesday try Bbc I player

It's seemed like a very hard industry to get quality staff

Incredibly hard when the top salary is minimum wage and you are required to turn out work constantly like a hamster on a wheel for X hours per day.

Didn't 5 from 17 leave in a couple of weeks, some after one day and then one hit the jackpot of a £7.50 an hour job in a call centre !

Note also that it was no altruistic measure on the owner's part to try and build up UK jobs, but rather a desperate attempt to combat massive wage inflation at his factory in China, where he was facing revolt amongst the peasants unless they received a 200% wage increase.

Only when Chinese workers cost more than unemployed Scousers would he think of bringing production back to the UK.
