UNLESS your site is having spidering issues, stay well away from a sitemap.

i have re submitted a site map because i have added many new pages to my site and also seo changes, should i delete the sitemap from my site and google webmaster tools?

Another question if i may, i have noticed google indexed a few new pages on march 3rd but didn't even re crawl my home page which is set to a 1 priority/ importance in my sitemap does anyone know why this might be?

Should i just delete my sitemap then?

I think it's important for a site to contain a sitemap for search engines (.xml/.txt) and a sitemap for users (.html/.php). How many pages does your website have? If it's less than 50, it wouldn't take you too long to just create a sitemap for Google yourself.

Good internal linking works better than just a sitemap.

I also encourage a user sitemap to be included on a custom 404 error page as well in the event that someone has posted an error in a backlink pointing to a page on the website.

This will help users locate the information they were expecting to see.

just been re indexed, but is still what my site was like over a week ago, i have made more changes since then !

I used to be bottom of page 4 but now i am on page 2 midway up for my main keyword, not exactly brilliant but at least its in the right direction!!

this site also has a tool to check google cache but it isnt showing the new cache, bit behind

i am still -1 but so is one of my competitors whom is at the top (under maps) of google so not to worried

There appears to be a little bit of confusion now in the thread. The OP was talking about an XML sitemap PURELY for the search engines. Not a normal site visible sitemap for users etc. nor custom 404 sitemaps, t is purely xml sitemaps for the search engines, and it was this that I mentioned can screw a site up.

A small static site absolutely doesn't need to use xml sitemps, and if it does, then there is something seriously wrong with the design and on page SEO (structure linking architecture etc)

Absolulety untrue. If all the pages of your site is in the index and regularly spidered then a site map is not needed. In fact using one can make things worse.

You only need a sitemap is G is struggling to find all of your pages or it is very dynamic with regular updates. Even then it's not going to make G suddenly drop everything and reindex the site. All a sitemap does is wave at Google and say 'I'm here' along with gazillion other sites all doing the same thing.

The brief answer is that without a sitemap google asssigns page values based on the hierachal structure of your files and links. an XML sitemap will have a page value (most default to 0.5 across the board. By submitting this you are telling Google that YOU value all your pages equally, and to treat them as such.

In short, you can alter the page values of importance for internal structure, and as a result, screw up what Google already has in place for each page.

Well if you don't include it Google assumes an importance of 0.5 for every page!
If you don't need a sitemap don't make one. In reality very few sites need to have a sitemap, if your site is already in the index you should definately steer clear.

most of my pages are now indexed, i have just deleted my xml siemap from my site and from google (in webmaster tools) is this all i need to do to avoid any bad effects from having an xml sitemap? eg do i need to delete it from anywhere else it might have been stored?
