Hi I'm going to get someone to create a WordPress site for me. I have used WordPress in my previous job just for things like updating content, making blog posts etc but that's as far as my knowledge goes!

On the home page I would really want a tool which would be like a selection assistant which would then bring up a list of services through a decision making process with maybe 5 or 6 questions.. So like

Q1- are you interested in A, B, C D or not sure yet
Q2 are you looking for one off purchase, weekly sub monthly sub

Etc etc which would then provide a list of options.

What would this type of tool or plugin be called please?

These are called called a conditional fields. There are a number of plugins that can create these sort of fields in their form generators.

But from what you describe it seems you would need a lookup table or calculator to generate the outputs. It’s not difficult or expensive to build but not something you can do yourself.

An example:

The National Careers Service website has an excellent example of multi-step forms
https://nationalcareers.service.gov.uk/skills-assessment

This multi-step form example might not directly help you with finding a suitable Wordpress plug-in, however the usability is extremely good and might guide some of your design choices
  1. User answers 33 multiple-choice questions
  2. The questions take 5-10 minutes total
  3. At the end user is presented with a list of career recommendations with further information
  4. For each career the user can answer further questions
  5. The user is then presented with specialist areas within each career

They don't have to be multistep forms.

Conditional fields are easy to do and can display subsequent options on the same page.

For example. You could ask for gender and marital status and if the responses are female and divorced and conditional field asking for maiden name can display.

Or you could have a slider for monthly costs and display additional questions depending the position of the slider.

Many thanks for the replys.

It might even work with just one question at the top and then have filters to narrow down the results. I'm struggling to think of the best way to show it, especially on a mobile. At the moment I have the info in a spreadsheet but it has 10 columns which is going to be hard to take in especially on a mobile so I was thinking using questions to narrow the field first with questions, then show the results but without the columns that the questions have already dealt with if that makes sense...

Something like at the very top of this could work. So you have 4 tabs of options (in this case package holidays, cruise etc) so someone could click one and then press search and then just generate a list of results which has filters like on the second screenshot?

Ah it won't let me post photos as I am new but it was pics of tui.co.uk search engine and results.

Would that be a better option?

Complicated.

It’s doable but will need something bespoke. I built a number of these for clients over they years. The biggest problem is the data. If you want to display holidays then you need an API built into the form to pull the data from the database.

Tui and other holiday companies paid thousands for their forms. You may end up with large bill as well.

If you want to send me the details in a PM I can give you an idea of complexity and cost.

Thanks! I have the data all ready in a spreadsheet.. It will be basic info and an affiliate link at the end. Fortunately its not travel related and are products that are unlikely to change on a regular basis aside maybe slightly different promotions.

Then it shouldn't be to difficult to build. If formatted correctly the spreadsheet can be uploaded to wordpress to generate the data arrays making your life even easier.
