What pains you about e-mail marketing?

Hello

I am new to this forum and am interested to learn what pains people about e-mail marketing. I am hoping to conduct more thorough research in the future so I can understand the specifics of people's issues but am also interested to know when you have a problem about email marketing, what keywords do you put into Google to find a solution to your problem and do you actually find a solution.

Thank you for your interest.

Receiving it

Same, specifically receiving email from someone that's using a generic 'salesy' template and hasn't done any research into me or my business. Emails requesting to speak to whoever's in charge of my office furniture just get sent straight to spam. See also, offers for web or logo design.

I'm actually quite happy to receive a targeted cold email from someone offering something of value to my business so long as it's a actually written (or adapted) for me and doesn't give off the impression I'm just a name on a huge list.

My biggest hate though is pushy marketers that relentlessly follow up a cold-email I've ignored. I actually tested one such sender once after repeatedly getting 'follow-up' emails from her. She chased me for a response twice a week for nearly 2 months before finally giving up.

As above, I don't want to receive marketing emails from companies I've never heard of. But luckily GDRP means this will all stop very soon.

Same as everyone else,... receiving it.

I would never send an unsolicited email to a potential client and absolutely detest it when I am not shown the same courtesy. My biggest pet peeves are "SEO" marketers from other countries that tell me my website is hard to find... which begs the question - how the heck did they find it in the first place then!!

My dissolved company email address receives probably a dozen emails a day from companies I have not heard of.
Have had phone calls following up the emails.

I have a growing list of companies I will not choose to do business with.

Yes, I find that amusing. My principle sites are ebay and amazon.
They do appear high in search results unless I'm working on an ecological report about rainforests for a few weeks.

I use Mailwasher to look at emails whilst still on the mail server so that I can delete those that I don't want.

Quite a few emails tell me that I can't view their email as Mailwasher doesn't read HTML so I invariably end up deleting them off the mail server without even having the pleasure of seeing what they are about

OK so consent seems to be the main area of grievance. I would assume as business owners, when conducting your own marketing, e-mail or otherwise, you give potential customers a consent option.

What other problems pain you about email marketing aside from unwanted emails from businesses who spend to much time marketing to you and not learning about your business?

I find it annoying when they have an "open this email subject title" that has no relation to the email content.

I also find, (We noticed your website bla bla bla SEO this and SEO that) really annoying.

Especially when SEO is a load of bull$hit. Google, Bing, Yahoo and Duckduckgo have all said time and time again that they will never release their ranking algorithms, yet these specialist know how to get you to the top of these search engines.

The best bit is each and every one of these search engines all use different algorithms, responding to a different set of criteria, so it's not even a one size fits all.

The sure bet one way to the top is to pay the search engines direct for the pleasure not SEO scammers.

Think I may of just gone on a rant there. Rant over. o_O:)

Sending me badly worded, irrelevant or unnecessary email is a pain. Even if I’ve opted in the amount of garbage that is sent outweighs anything useful.
