What makes a great marketing agency?

I'm very curious as to what you think makes a good marketing agency.
What skills should they possess? How should they interact with your business? What factors should they take into account when first dealing with your company, and so on.

All comments welcomed.

Thanks

They should demonstrate that they realise promotional marketing is simply the tip of the iceberg, and that 'digital marketing' is largely a new 'buzz' phrase with little meaning.

They should also make sure that the websites in any portfolio they have don't demonstrate a complete lack of understanding of both marketing and copywriting.

If they do the above they immediately have a huge advantage over the majority of the competition. I couldn't put an exact figure on it, but I'd estimate 95 % of marketing agencies I come across don't understand how to best advise their clients.

Start with the basics. Have an initial strategy meeting, which identifies what the client hopes to achieve. Establish their target audience and then it is your role to focus on the most targeted solutions to reach them. Also know early on what the client is thinking of investing, and plan accordingly - but also set expectations realistic to their budget.

    Totally agree.

The real value starts in them understanding your market.

From this, all their marketing ideas and efforts will stem.

Sure they might strike lucky with a campaign once in a while but to really hit the marketing sweet spot, they need to have a deep understanding of your customers. They then have to use the right tools whether it be DM, Facebook, Google Ads, PR or whatever. And they must follow a "process of marketing" using tools often in combination and running campaigns in a paced way. Then you will start seeing results.

Simple. They should make you more money than they cost you. And they should be able to prove that... :)
    ^^^This.

Everything else is just fluff and nonsense. I don't care what tools they use or what buzzwords are in vogue, I just want to see my business make more money as a result of their efforts.
