What is the most effective thing you can do when you are exhausted at work?

Recently, I have been doing work like crazy and juggling multiple things at once, which lead me towards Productive Procrastination. The only thing that helps me when I am exhausted is reading good stuff, and for that, I go through the articles of Urban Daddy.

What do you guys do when you are totally worn out at work? Do you read something? Watch something? And what are the online resources you would recommend if someone is in such situation?

I listen to music through my headphones - it helps me to relax and focus when I am tired and stressed. I also take regular short breaks, which might simply be going outside the building for a couple of minutes. If you're knackered it's no good staring at a computer screen for long periods otherwise your productivity effectively goes down as you can't concentrate on what you are supposed to be doing.

You are absolutely right, Jayser! Music sure helps you in relaxing your mind. Short breaks are really essential to freshen the mind.

For me it is doing rather mundane things like watching rubbishy TV, cutting the lawn cleaning the car. Basically anything that is the opposite of my work.

By the way what is "productive procrastination"? Is that procrastination about one thing but doing something else instead. Maybe that is just plain avoidance.

I just stop work and go do some fun stuff. Often involving beer. Well actually it's always beer.

I have no plans to ever work so hard I get even slightly drowsy. After 40 years of toil my plans are to now do as little as possible. And drink beer.

As odd as it may sound - when I'm exhausted, I go to the gym, strap on a pair of headphones, hit the rowing machine, weight machines & treadmill..... & just forget about the world for 1hr15mins or so.

You''ll feel great afterwards (because 'happy chemicals' start flowing through your body).

I started back in mid June ...since then, I've lost 2.5 stone and the 'Dad belly' that I'd slowly acquired over 13yrs of a sedentary lifestyle (a positive by-product!), but it's really more to do with just getting away from the desk, listening to some music & forgetting about work (& indeed life) for a moment.

You'll sleep great at night too (which in turn means you're fresher the next day)...a festival of win.

For me walking is a good way to blow out the cobwebs and revitalise. A good 1 hour walk gives me time to think and plan without distraction, and Pish_pah said it gets the happy juices flowing.

Often while walking I'll think of a way to overcome the problems that were bogging me down at the desk.

I ultimately get more work done by taking an hour out to walk than if I tried to stay working for the hour.

When I feel physically tired I go for a 2-3 mile walk around the outskirts of the town. When you live in the valleys that means taking in some steep hills.

If I'm mentally tired its loud dance music, Red Bull and ProPlus to keep me going. I'm currently working on setting up a second business and it has meant plenty of midnight oil burning.

When I'm long term tired and just cant shake it, I take Ginseng based supplements - it takes a few days to get in to your system. Tablet form by a company called Red Kooga is best.
