What is the difference between DDR2 PC2 5300 and DDR PC2 3200

Ooo er that complicated

I was asking because i ran the crucial memory tool on my netbook

It says it has 1GB of DDR PC2 3200 and is suggesting and upgrade to 2GB but DDR2(!) PC2 5300

The thing is so slow it drives me potty and I was hoping a bit more memory might make the difference but I suspect it is that slow atom processor in there

I was surprised that it was moving from DDR to DDR2 but hey as I say - ooo er

There is very little difference between the 2 and some DDR2 is actually slower for laptops.
If it's a Atom then I guess it's a netbook? Atom processor are ridiculously slow and some tests have proved 10 year old Pentium 3's (yes 3!!!) are faster. What OS is it? You may see little difference between 1 and 2gb if winxp but a huge difference if vista/7

Atoms are amazing for small netbooks and low power pc's, once you start adding gfx cards and other shizzle, it becomes slow.

Back to the OP, the numbers are the "clock" speed of the RAM, normally in the following formats
333MHZ, 400MHZ and 525MHZ

You won't see a lot of difference going from 1GB of 333 to 1GB of 525, but you will see a difference in going from 1GB of 333 to 2gb of 525.

It will depend on your pc though, your OS, your motherboard and the functionality of the pc e.g. web browsing, gaming or image editing.

I think on the surface it would seem so but if you starting to do anything cpu intensive you'll notice a big difference.

You'll find Atom right near the bottom ;)

I wouldn't expect it to be even close to the top specs, as it is aimed at ultra portable laptops or media centre pc's.

I use my trusty netbook for showing clients work / web browsing and basic coding with notepad, so don't need anything powerful.

Ah that will explain it. Much much slower than my very aging desktop but that was pentium 4

I knew they were not fast - part of having good battery life - but as I said ANNOYINGLY slow.

Runs XP

I decided to just go ahead and buy it last night - £35 approx - so might see a slight improvement but maybe it is money down the pan since it rarely is used for anything extensive - because it is so sloooowww

Sorry if this an egg sucking lesson but have you run disc cleanup, turned of all non-essential apps and services, removed all the guff that builds up in the quickstart and so on.

You will be surprised at how much faster you can make a macine run if you do a bit of regular housekeeping.

Agree with the above. You can certainly do plenty of tweaking to eek every bit of performance out of the system. Drop me a line if you need any help.

They are not compatable. It will either take DDR or DDR2 not both. If its an Atom thats your problem. Does it have a hard drive or a solid state drive? I managed to get my Atom netbook to boot very fast into Ubuntu after taking the motherboard out to upgrade the RAM!

Not true. Desktop DDR and DDR2 are not compatible but laptop DDR can be compatible with both if your mobo suuports both.

I haven't come across any that does support both yet. I suppose it makes sense but I would imagine a lot of laptops that are old enough to support both are probably dead now anyway.

Still buy a lot of DDR1 for desktops but its very rare I upgrade a laptop with DDR now.

Well what came out said DDR2 400(3) on it - sticker wise - so not sure what happened there - dodgy sticker or ?? - it was the crucial scanner that was saying 1GB of DDR PC2 3200
It was as came with the machine so ??

What went in also had to come back out - it was only seeing 1GB but the crucial scanner and my memory said 2GB would work in the slot so no idea what is going on there

(Does not seem to be my time for technology at the moment)
