What do you want from Boris Johnson's successor?

Where do you think they should live?
Buckingham Palace. Any number of royal houses, estates, church properties. Hundreds if not thousands of rooms empty in those places. Plus they have the funds to support these poor people.

That would be a good start, before understanding these people’s particular reasons for choosing England, rather than anywhere else.

What a lovely gesture from our no doubt culturally and socially aware outgoing monarch. Great PR for what’s become a stale old institution.

A bit late to this thread, but one thing I would like to see from a new PM would be overturning the laws banning those awaiting decisions for asylum seeker applications.
People in those situations can be left waiting years. During that time they are banned from working, also I think banned from working in voluntary situations.

Then benefits to the country would be big. Allowing them - within any necessary limits - to work just as any of us do, would reduce or eliminate benefits costs to the taxpayer. Surely that's a big gripe from many opposing immigration?
And for professionals, it would allow them to keep up with with whatever regulations, protocols, methods of working, etc etc.
Could asylum seekers earn enough to pay for a roof over their heads or would they join the multitude of employed Brits who are on additional benefits or have to work in the black market to survive?

I think most asylum seekers and illegal immigrants already manage to find a way to work under the radar, plenty of people looking to take advantage of their situation.

Since no political party is willing to stop illegal migration introduce sensible routes of application to come to the UK, and any refused be barred from receiving benefits etc. if they come illegally.

Tax all companies on their turnover to avoid off shoring profits, it’s crazy that major companies avoid almost all taxes simply because they can afford enough tax specialists to do so.

The pendulum needs to swing back to the average person more, actually lifting their standards of living, otherwise the consequences will far outweigh the costs.

The NHS is far from perfect, but the thought of paying £3k just for an ambulance ride should convince most people the majority would never vote to go to a private funded system.

It is being done gradually by stealth not via an overt vote

I have a mate (now mayor of a midlands town) who is a retired nhs pathologist. He worked his way up via the labs learning as he went, but now you can't start without a degree. Also they have outsourced more and more of the labs to private firms (some of which have ex ministers as non execs) so the funding given to the NHS as a headline then has to be paid back out to those private firms (who between them have a near monopoly and run from central hubs). How can it make sense (even financial sense) for a set of bloods taken in a ward in Reading to be road transported to Bristol for lab works, that is >80 miles and 1.5hrs minimum door to door, non urgent only go a couple of times a day so a huge delay on testing which leads to extra nights in already oversubscribed beds even without the danger of damage.

In addition unless there has been an announcement in the last few minutes - that payrise announced yesterday. well the NHS had been promised enough £ to cover a 3% rise, any extra has to come out of their existing budgets, along with the hike in NI. As the UK's largest employer that is non an insubstantial amount.
