Both. PPC doesn’t have to be expensive (it depends on what you are selling and to whom). And if you are selling the same things as many others SEO could take many months of hard work.

Google shopping is the low-cost way forward for ecommerce but only if there is demand for your product type. If it's niche or new then nobody will search for it.

Since you're new to ecommerce I'd like to point out that ads and SEO alone will not suddenly make people come to your online store and hand over their cash. There is a buyer journey and you need to understand it.

Many people don't understand this which is why they say their paid ad campaigns fail.

It's not a case of setting ads and watching the money roll in. Consumers can take up to 10-15 touches with a brand or product before they buy. You need to capture their attention through SEO, Social, ads and then work hard to keep them interested, so they build that desire and are then ready to take an action.

Check out the Marketing principle AIDA (Awareness, Interest, Desire, Action). It will help you to understand the stages a buyer goes through. I'm not saying they don't impulse buy but they do go through these stages when the product is a considered or emotional purchase.

Also, make your ecommerce store a place for people to buy but also to hang out. Give them a reason to go there and stay there without having to buy something. Think about what will keep your customers engaged in your brand. Do what your competitors are not doing.

Your SEO should also be primarily content focused to attract qualified traffic from 'long-tail' (niche) search terms and

Your social media channels should be about creating awareness, interest and desire, not directly selling.

Above all, you need to define your target audience and you want to appear in front of them in the channels that they use. Don't try to be everywhere. Go where spend they time.

You can normally utilise the data from PPC to spearhead your SEO strategy, if you use broad keywords you can ascertain long-tail keywords to go after and what works for you. PPC is immediate and SEO is gradual, if you're starting out, SEO is likely the best place to start because if you mess it up it won't cost you anything, PPC is very unforgiving for newbies. Use budget control wisely.

If you are new to the industry and want to establish yourself in the search engine results, the quickest way to do is through PPC but, SEO is a big help too and didn't cost you much money. But you can do both. Good Luck.
