SSD pluged into the router at home, same on the server and VaultPress for clients that want it.

I keep all my documents on dropbox and everything else is backed up to an external HDD. Since I'm a techy I have no problem with reinstalling and setting everything up again if something goes awry, but luckily nothing has ever happened. Apart from that one time when I spilled water on my Mac air, but I got it fixed :)

Due to user error... I deleted everything from the root folder of our server this afternoon

Even though I know we backup data every hour, I was rather nervous having to reinstall the OS, and transfer 3 years of artwork from one of the backup drives we rotate through.

Seem's that our backup system works well, no critical data loss, just need to re-write a few house keeping scripts and set up Rsnapshot again.

I could do with writing some bash scripts that I can manually run to carry out certain tasks we need to do occasionally.

So many options..

How valuable is your data?

If you were to lose all of it or part of it today, how will that impact your business. The more critical it is will drive the minimum requirement of what is needed.

Example, not fussed then carry
If need to have cloud copy with no back ups. So if you delete it then it's gone. Dropbox, one drive, google drive etc..
If you want cloud and backup copy then AWS or Azure storage..

We live in a 'New Computer Age' where even corporate entities are moving to cloud storage and cloud solutions. In the world of Local Area Network we shifted data storage to server resources and backed up the servers. In the new world the focus is moving back to the local device, with storage in a cloud resource. I tend to recommend replication of critical data back to a local device and scripts to copy snapshot data to removable HD. The external HDD being disconnected when not being read or written to. If 'Ransom Ware' strikes all connected machines and devices can become encrypted and rendered unusable. Recovery, using Windows 10, is matter of rebuild or replacement of machines and devices and restore of data from the isolated HDDs

To all those people relying on Dropbox etc, what would they do if a file became corrupted? Dropbox will sync the corrupted version to all devices under some circumstances. Same with ransomware. Replication is not a backup in itself! If you have a local copy, it needs to be outside of your Dropbox folder for this to be an effective strategy.

rsnapshot is an excellent tool, but there are a number of reasons why it could fail, and it will do so silently, rolling back to the last good backup which could be days/weeks ago.

You really need to monitor it in some way. Simplest would be to call it from a wrapper script that will drop you an email if its exit code is non-zero.

Google Drive with Spanning Backup ( to AWS ) for office stuff.
( Being a Google for Work Partner & a Spanning Partner - it would be rude not to )

Direct backup to AWS for server stuff, only because my control panel of choice (webmin/virtualmin) doesn't have a Google Cloud Storage button but does have an AWS button.

As for PC / Mac operating systems and software etc, I don't care I could set fire to my computer and work on a brand new one as quick as logging in. Such is the wonder of the work anywhere / any device that is possible in world of technology today (but reading this thread is seems that news hasn't got through to 80% of businesses yet).

p.s. again I'm biased but why would anyone use Dropbox when they can use Google Drive and pay less and get more features (comparing drop for business versus Google Apps unlimited)

I am using Lenovo Home NAS which automatically creates backup every 30 min from my laptop and computer, It has storage capacity of 1TB and everything is under my control. Also it works faster as it don't need any Internet connection to work just a Wifi Router.

Don't save anything to my PC now - all in folders on Dropbox, allowing me to access from anywhere, and then backed up off site through iDrive.

Haven't needed to restore for a while, but iDrive's restore function works well.

Not lost any data for a number of years now.

I have relied on Google Drives for years, having a professional account for each line of work. It works well for me.
    Dropbox is OK
But i am being increasingly won over by iCloud by Microsoft. £7.99 a month for 1TB of space and the lastest Microsoft. I dislike being tied in anywhere but its working well for me so far.

More serious than that DAT tapes if they still do them, keep a copy offsite as well in case of fire.

I've been using Retrospect for many years to back up a handful of Macs & PCs in our office. It supports backing up to Dropbox. Every evening our main databases and accounts file are backed up to Dropbox which then gets synced to my Mac laptop, which in turn is backed up to Time Machine. In this way I can revert a file to any day in the last year or more.
