Weekly SEO

For those of you who do completely white hat SEO (hopefully all of you!), what does your SEO plan look like? I'm just trying to get some new ideas for my own SEO plan, and sharing may help others (especially after those awful Google updates!)

On a weekly basis I do the following:

At least 2 new posts to my sites blog (bookmark and share the links to the posts)
Try to do a couple of guest posts per week
Post on my social networking accounts each day
Comment on relevant blog posts with relevant answers

I feel like that isn't enough, so would love if you could share your ideas too.

You appear to be doing a good consistent SEO job. Two posts for your own blog and two guest posts a week is decent work, especially if each of the four articles are of good quality.

It's also great that you update your social accounts on a regular basis.

Is it enough? Well, it depends on the type of site you're promoting, your goals and the results you're getting with the current plan.

If you're SEOing and marketing a blog, you should be focused on growing your readership through genuine networking with your audience. That's where social media marketing and guest blogging come into play. Actually, social networking alone can be enough in case you apply best practices and your blog's content is of interest to your target audience.

Apparently, guest blogging results are not measured by the number of articles you publish a week. A guest post from Mashable can double your readership in one day, while posts from less prominent or relevant blogs can bring zero visitors and a couple of PR2 dofollow links.

Set up your goals, namely:
1) define keywords you want to rank for
2) define the amount of traffic you want to get

Analyze how well your current strategy is working for your goals. See what you can improve, e.g. search for better blogs to publish your guest articles or apply cutting-edge social media practices.

Didn't see keyword research, competitor analysis or content optimisation in the list.

And as earl says, what was so bad about the google updates?

Some more things you could add to your routine (just a quick couple of pointers):

Manual social bookmarking of your blog articles.

Ping your guest posts

Make sure your sitemap.xml is up to date

Track your google webaster tools for any notices / changes

Check google analytics to see which keywords your traffic is coming from and try and focus your internal / external efforts on strengthening your site for these areas

Make appropriate blog comments on relevant sites with a strong community following

etc etc.
