Hi there,

I am about to open my coffee shop and I need to hire a few people to help me.
The staff will have an hourly wage and will be paid according the amount of hours they have done.

I was just wondering whether I should pay them monthly or weekly.
Do you have any experience in this? What is usually done in the catering industry? What is more convenient?

Thank you for your help!

I definitely vote for monthly! You will have enough to do each week without having to take on a weekly payroll.

I own pub/hotels and have always paid my staff in 4-weekly cycles. When a new member of staff first starts, I offer them a sub if they have moved from an employer who pays weekly. I wouldn't expect to sub after the first three months though.

On "payroll week", I have a cut-off date of Sunday, spend a couple of hours on the Monday getting all paperwork up to date, enter the payroll on the Tuesday and print the payslips and PAYE notes and release the BACS. Pay hits staff bank accounts on the Thursday. It sounds a lot but it is only a cople of hours each month.

Admin side of me says monthly, the side of me that worked in bars and part time jobs similar to this when I was at college says weekly. If your only doing it for enough money to go out on a weekend, that's all your bothered about and you want your cash that week (or week after)
