Hello,

We are a firm of Chartered Accountants & Tax Advisors based in Leicester and we work with clients all over UK.

We have launched a new website - www.pabmans.co.uk. I am keen to get some feedback, especially from the point of view of whether the website is appealing to make contact with us if you are looking for accountants to help you with your individual or business needs.

I would also be keen to get some feedback on how we could improve our SEO, though we are appearing on Google and do receive leads.

Was looking OK until the hero image appeared. Get rid - adds no value and makes the words look all washed out. And it only need to be on the homepage.

Change the font colour to black (the blue looks naff).

Get rid of that truly awful scrolling effect when you click on a link. It scrolls up and shows me the hero image each time and not the content I want to see. What idiot thought this would be a good idea?

Homepage lists your services but none of them link to anything. The list is different to those on your services page. These don't link to anything either.

Pretty much all the copy begins with 'We...'. Needs rewording to focus on the prospective client.

I see a mobile number. That suggests a work from the back bedroom business.

It's not responsive. Reduce the browser width and it overspills.

On my phone you have the hamburger (yuk) - when I click on a menu option nothing appears to happen - because you show the hero image on every page.

And finally -

Design wise your website looks decent. I like the design of your footer as it's very appropriate as an accountant business.

There is a lot that can be done to improve it:

- As mentioned above I agree completely that Wix is not a good option as it's slow, expensive and you are reliant on their platform to keep your website.

- Responsive: Your website is not responsive, in 2020 this is a problem as it has long been an important ranking factor with Google. I am surprised that Wix is allowing a website to be built that isn't responsive.

- Your menu text is on the small side as your content text is much larger in comparison.

- I agree with the mention of your hero image. It is too large and while the concept of growing money is good the space is very valuable and wasted. Also the white text with the green background is not clear enough as the contrast is off. I would recommend changing this text to the dark green of your menu.

- Your content all has varying widths. For example the main text on the homepage is less wide than your menu/logo. The content box with full width backgrounds is wider than both. Then your footer content is less wide than everything. In most cases is good practise to keep the same width for all content on each page.

- On your sub-pages I would recommend removing the hero image, even for the homepage it's a consideration but definitely on the sub-pages it is important to show the user the content they are after at the top of the page.

I had a quick look over the SEO of your site and here's a few things that you've missed.

2: You'll see some common elements going on in those results. The blue coloured title wording (you'll likely see it in purple) is almost 100% the same and the 2 lines of smaller text wording in Google's listing are almost identical too.

They should all be unique, unique to each page. Nobody's spent any time doing that job and it's an easy one to do, similarly there's no sign of any attempt to write anything compelling in any of those 3 lines of text.

You rank half way down page 3 of Google for "accountants leicester" but you'd help that ranking up if you stopped the verbatim word repeats all over the place. I'd also do some keyword research to check for other areas within your 'patch' that you might want to target in terms of rankings.

The other very obvious thing to remember is that when you rank on page 1 of Google, that is your first chance to say something that actually appeals to your potential readers (those looking on Google for you, not by name but by keyword) but all you have in your title is this "Accountants Leicester | Pabmans Chartered Accountants" - keep the first two words but come up with a 'hook' - something to help you to be seen as more appealing to your potential readers. You need to rank high and write with a hook to pull in those looking for what you have to offer in Leicester. Ranking without a hook can be almost pointless.

Similarly, you need to create some meta descriptions that'd make you stand out too. Google's your first sales pitch to potential clients, your website is your second sales pitch but if you improved the wording that's displayed in Google to make you more engaging with readers you'd increase clients, it's not rocket science just common sense. Look on your 'About' page for some pointers, they are there.

Another wise move would be to dump Wix as has been flagged up above.

If you paid a developer and got a wix site, you may as well bend over the desk next time you have a meeting with him planned. There's nothing terrible about the site, per se, but it looks like a site that's been built by an accountant. The copy is poor, and shows you haven't used any kind of marketing strategy upon which to build the site. If you are happy with Wix, just play around with it yourself and test and make changes as you go. You don't expect to pay a developer and get a site like that.

Mainly because they haven't done any developing. All they have done is set up a Wix template. Possibly an hour's work if they spent half of that making a cup of tea.

My developer is a very close friend who has knowledge of Wix websites. He is someone who has picked up his skillset by doing some self learning and by no means a professional developer.

They are the wrong person to be building your website. Wix is the wrong platform for your business.

If you want an effective website find another developer. Or better still, first find someone who understands marketing.

To a certain extent a website is important to drive in leads. Of course networking and other marketing means are always the most effective and has always worked well for us though we would like to improve our online presence.

you need someone who knows how to structure a site, can advise on content, fix the internal navigation, manage trust marks and CTA and the hundreds of other elements that make up an effective website.

The site is OK but just that, its not responsive and looks quite bad on mobile devices. There should really be no exception in the modern day not to have a fully responsive site.
