Hi all,

Newbie poster so apologies if this has been asked a thousand times over. I built my own website around 3 years ago through vista print and after endless reading and work I managed to get it top of google for my chosen terms. I then went full time employed after around 2 years and let the site go. I've now paid for a site and has been live for around a month. My question is what sites do you recommend to list my website on to boost my google ranking? Thanks in advance

I don't reccomend you get your site listed anywhere. Most of the old sources are havens for spam and ignored by the search engines.

Focus on getting great content on the site, testimonials, project pages and case studies and lots of internal linking.

I'd also be concerned that your new site seems to be invisible on Google.

<edit>I've now found your site - you are paying a lot for not very much. There are loads of things wrong with the site. I tell you what they are but website reviews are only for full members</edit>

fisicx is right about getting your site optimised in the first place, but I don't agree about not getting links. As long as they are quality links then it will help. If you can get links on relevant sites to your industry, or where your clients might visit then you will get traffic from it. Niche and local directories are ideal, especially if you are targeting local areas.

Links are good. Getting listed on directories and whatever isn't (except for a few rare exceptions).

Incorrect on many levels.

My company is in the biz of professional publishing - I've owned every type of website eg: blogs, magazines, directories, membership sites and 2 offline businesses etc, so I'm telling you as someone who did run a directory for my clients, that I'll tell you how it is and won't lie for personal gain.

Why will I tell you the truth and not gain or not want anything? I don't have a signature/weblink leading to my websites, and I don't desperately tout for business on forums, as I don't need to.

Just one of my websites alone, got approx. 12 million searches in its time, and that's why I can talk the talk.

-----------------------------------------

Now, fisicx is coreect about 1 thing he said;
Most of the old sources are havens for spam

that is quite right, but then so does anything with an online form. But most directories, even the older ones have systems to take care of the spam, so its not a problem - spammers just won't get listed - ever!

fisicx is wrong about directories being dead etc, even the old one have such established traffic, its worth paying to be listed. Most only charge a few pounds/dollars, so the cost is insignificant to the rewards eg: new clients, opportunity to get testimonials for your website, as you get new clients, they can be used in your sales pitch to more clients.

Directories are full of information, the web is about information and people look for information to help them in business. Naturally, directories stand out highly in the engines and so people search them in the billions of searches every month. If people didn't search directories, mine wouldn't be on the web, and my clients wouldn't pay me year on year to be listed.

Directories are to be found in the top 100'000 sites in Alexa, have high pagerank, a quality rating by Google! and is why so many kill themselves to get listed in them.

Yes. But it's pointless doing this with your new site. The structure is all wrong and almost impossible to optimise. It's a bad site, they have sold you a pup.
