    You can get cheaper than that with overseas designers, maybe look on upwork. I think more important than a nice design for what you want it for, is to make sure you have all your online properties interconnected with the website to send signals to google your trusted and real business eg fb profile, directory listings, Google business profile etc. optimising for your website / google business to pop up at the top of google for relevant search terms.

    Yes, but installing WP takes minutes. There is nothing to build (they only need a few pages). Choose one of the standard free themes to make it look pretty and it's all done. At most 2 hours work.

    If they them want ongoing maintenance that's a different contract.

    I agree some people don't want to do anything themselves but £500 to install and configure WordPress is just ripping people off.
    You might just slap together a happy slappy site, but we don't... We setup the pages, either develop a custom theme or heavily modify a theme, optimize for speed, tweak user experience as necessary and much more.

    That's the difference between a real developer and a pretend developer bud,

    Depends on your marketing plan, target audience and products of services on offer.

    An off the shelf theme is often sufficient.

    Other businesses need the customisation you offer.
