Would be interested to know what I can expect to pay for a 7 to 8 page website, css complaint with mixture of text and graphics. It will be for web hosting with outsourced web design as an add on.

Its only an idea at the moment so doesnt need to be exact

I would charge £250 for a 7/8 page site with 1 email contact form. For another £100 I would integrate into a cms, so you can edit the pages without knowing any code. I would recommend wordpress for the cms.

You would need to supply images and text for the content, I would supply any images to do with the layout.

send me a PM if interested

thanks

I would say £400 +. Anything less than that I would be little sceptical...

**awaits backlash from budget webbies**

))) installation of wordpress is simple) Custom design costs from £300, but design for wordpress is much cheeper, thus £400 for simple blog is a big price.

Price depends on work volume and quality and there is no sense in paying more than this costs in fact.

Of coarse, you'd better look into the portfolio of the candidate you are giving the order to.

Hope this will help you to make the right choise.

You're right - to be honest you'd be hard pushed to find anyone of any reputation taking on work like this for less than a grand but hey, that's up to them!

Wrong :p I would expect an agency to charge £1000+ for a 8 page website, but for a freelancer should be able to do it for less than half of that.
I would say 10-15 hours designing and building it the homepage, another 10 hours to build the other pages & to add the content.

I would say £300-£500 is the ball park figure for an 8 page site, some charge more, some charge less. Do the research on the person and decide if it's worth the money

P.s My cost was supposed to be £350 not £250

Then you are undercharging :)

£350 for 20 hours work = £17.50/hour. Once you take off your costs such as rent, bills, electricity, hosting, software costs even if you are working at home you would still be working for less than the minimum wage ...

I know but I have had to be more competitive, I have had a few queries on my site but after quoting them i got, oh that's too expensive.

I asked this on a freelancer forum and got a rough estimate of what to charge. I also get a designer to do all my design work (now) so I make even less

Unfortunately the type of people I get asking me for sites (at the moment) try and pit me against the Indians on getafreelancer and elance. I cannot work for that low.

I don't do the hosting, and I don't use any paid software (gimp, notepad2 and firefox) but really need to get a copy of PS

I work more than 5 years in web development) Different countries have different prices. It's not a problem to check prices in foregin web studios ;)

Also everyone's got his/her old works that can show what they can :)
And when someone sais the price, he must say what this price covers/for example 250 for installation of wordpress and making a design for x pages;
or installation of CMS and making custom design and this will cost xxxx.

Another big question is what client wants - just static pages or some cms for content editing. There are too many variables to declare that you can do it exactly for 250.

Besides, TS asked about the design and design will cost from 300

I know exactly what you mean but that's where the skill of selling yourself and your service comes in. I get the same sort of thing with hosting and people who want unlimited everything with sugar on top for £1/year. The thing is I don't compete on price and stick to my guns. Sadly people often find out the hard way by trying to save a few quid...

With such a minimal portfolio as well, It's harder for me to charge what I believe I should. I do get quite a few enquiries about fixing websites another designer has messed up. Far too many people cut corners in websites, and realise why there investment isn't providing results. A lot of people are getting stung by 'rogue' designers who just use templates or outsource the work out to india and asia.

I am making more of an effort to grab local business so should be able to get away from the above mess.

    1) why 20 hours? ))) It's imposible to say how much time you need untill you see the task)
    2) for UK £17.5 is low but for many other countries this is real
    3) rent, electricity, and surely host don't cost so much in other countries

I agree with you that good work must cost good money. But every work must cost as much as it costs.

It is needful to compare not prices but quality.

Yes indian sites are very bad)
Who sais that one needs to make site in asia? ) (I am not from asia ;) ) Our clients are from UK and USA, also we make a lot of redesigns after UK designers. I repeat myself - you should see portfolio.

20 hours was an estimate for a 8 page site, a website might take longer, depends on so many factors.
£17.50 for a uk webdeveloper is peanuts, if I was in employment for an agency, I would be looking at £25 an hour minimum.
the uk is an expensive place to live as it;s a developed country.

I know an indian can do work for $6 an hour, where as I couldn't dream of it. The way I see things is, if someone wants to hire a foreigner, they are going for the price option. My reasons are:

    1) You will be lucky to find a foreign national that has a grasp of the english language that a UK provider will have.
    2) A lot use tables and templates to build the sites. (a lot of UK 'pro's' do too).
    3) Support - With a UK based person, you can phone them for free or a few pence to talk to them. To talk to a foreign nation, you will have to ring half way round the world and end up calling in the wrong time.

Wasting your breath Phil. Most web 'companies' are run by technicians not business people and they seldom understand the real cost of delivering their services.

Yep I know Dave although there are some designers who are forced to live on the bread line because of the undercutting tactics of so called professionals ;)

Total fallacy.Good work comes from the quality of the workman not the price.;)

    Earl

I didn't write that good work came from the price ;) I said that good work should be estimated right.

Rembrant didn't get anything from his paintings ) Do you think he was a bad artist? ;) A lot of modern artists sell their works at high prices but they never be like Rembrant. :)

I know of a few people like me who are having to charge as little as possible as we are now in a "haggling" society where anyone will try anything to get the price down.
Add the indians and other foreigners who are "spamming" on the UK forums advertising their "cheap" prices. (see wdf forum for this). Just this morning a prospective client told me they got their website done by another person for £200 less , a UK freelancer who outsources to india
