Website design costs

Good example of a professional design @horsey1 - just one thing I thought to mention is that the website shows some big padding above and below the Flash navigation. Otherwise it looks very good and is the type of website design worth investing in.

Now the picture becomes more clear. You charge £250 for a website, but charge extra to help with the content that goes in it. Obviously your idea of website design is completely different from the other web designers here - taking into account what you wouldn't provide that others would, your £250 website would become priced more in line with the standard price of between £500 - £700 once you add in the extras.

SEO and other considerations are all part of good web design - no point in creating your website without considering how the HTML and content will be optimised to be easily accessible by the search engines for search placements. Again, leaving this extra work out means that your clients websites are a lot less likely to be found by search engines and reducing the potential for the performance of their website.

As for content, sorry, but this should be considered as part of the website. Would you go to McDonnalds and buy a meal just for the packaging? Having a pretty website template is ok, but it wont do anything without good quality content to convert visitors to enquirers or buyers. Strategical design of content and supporting wording by complementary design and features is the only way to maximise potential for conversion. If you leave this to the client to insert themselves, they will do a poor job at it because they don't have the experience of knowledge of good web design - the reason why they hire you in the first place.

The experienced web designer will know that when someone asks for a 7/8 page website design, they are looking for the complete website that includes their content setup and on site SEO as a minimum - although most will not know the technical terms of what to ask for.

So fun) Read my post through carefully ;)

So you admit that your prices are in line with standard prices - just that you don't include some of the standard elements like on page SEO to give a lower price ;). My policy is never to compete on price, but to compete on providing the best value for what the client can afford.

Optimized for SEO :)

Optimised to reach the target audience of the website :D.

content a part of web design? maybe down there in the gutter. yet another ill informed debate attracting the dregs and bedroom bandits.

if you need to be discussing this stuff you really are so far off the radar.

You have absolutely lost me there - not sure if you are saying that content is or isn't part website design :|. To clarify my point, the original poster asks:

Would be interested to know what I can expect to pay for a 7 to 8 page website, css complaint with mixture of text and graphics. It will be for web hosting with outsourced web design as an add on.

Its only an idea at the moment so doesnt need to be exact

You could give his client a template design, but that is not what they require. If you consider content as separate from design, then you are going about it the wrong way. How can you design a website if you don't know what the content is? Without content, there is no purpose for design. Good design complements content/functionality to emphasise the message/usability - it should never diactate it ;). A rule that is so simple and true, yet so many ignore it and focus on making their websites look pretty without a focus on the goals they wish to achieve.

Stuff like this really makes me laugh. If you're going to start a "we're better than you war" then at least create something awesome to argue with.

As for you Nigelnt, no offence, but if I'm correct and this http://ariytech.com/ is your portfolio and you state you have 5 years experience, I'd find a new career.

justintime, a ballpark figure for what you seem to require. You'd be looking at between £500 - £800. Obviously more info would be required for an accurate quote.

Cheers.

Not too sure who is debating about who is better than who, but the debate is more about what can be provided for a specific price. The original question was how much can a 7/8 page website be provided for - certain people are claiming £250, with one of them Nigelnt giving the impression that he can do it for £250, but then hides the fact that he will not design the content or consider SEO for this price - which then brings his prices inline with the standard prices quoted. Your price quoted of £500 - £800 pretty much what everyone else who is realistic has been quoting.

As for the website you pointed of Nigelnt's work - maybe he's updated his website? Seems professional enough to me. Maybe he should quote the prices of the projects in his portfolio and what he provided for the prices.

Depends on who you are hiring. You have designers who purely focus on design, designers who combine SEO, designers who combine copywriting and designers who combine software development. No combination is wrong. Either way, you still need to have content for the design to complement - whether this is developed by the designer or a third party. Good design is all about enhancing the message to be delivered clearly to the user, but you can't do this if you don't have access to the content.

Thanks for all the replies, and the ensuing debate!!

So realistically I am looking at £400-£600 to get a good site made, with me providing the content. I wasn't interested in Joomla or Wordpress because I would be able to change content myself, as I know basic html but not too savvy on css.

Your portfolio shows 4 websites, 2 of which are yours...........designed any others?

Brownie I've been designing for around 8 years. Either for other agencies or freelancing. The work I did when I was lead design at an agency I'd rather not put my name to as it was company policy to let the client have far to much input and you can imagine what sort of stuff they asked for.

My freelancing work is again, for other big agencies and part of my contract with them was not to put my name to it, obviously this paid more and I was happy to do that.

iKreativ is pretty new really so you'll have to wait for more to come.

I'm just finishing another now for a cameraman who has worked for ITV, BBC, RSPB, Nat Geo and The Discovery Channel to name but a few, he has also just finished an awesome climbing movie which is sponsored by Nokia and Berghaus. This should be live by next week.

Might be an idea to put on the Showcase page that you have designed many more however you offer a white label service. May be an idea to put up statistics about what you have done, keeping the anonymity still there however still giving potential customers an idea about you.

Hi Sanjiv,

It just seems a little pointless, anyone can 'say' they have done stuff but unless a client can actually see the work...

I want to build iKreativ up from the ground up off the back of it's own work and reputation.

It's not actually doing too bad anyway and I'm getting quite a lot of interest and work coming through the site.

Cheers.

My friend is a proffesional web designer and can also design java websites and can also host, support and manage your website after its been designed he is good and will design your and all of the above for very low price. click on the link below to his website for more info.

http://www.justeasymedia.com/

very 'proffesional' - wot I get is reminiscent of Microsoft's Blue Screen of Death*

... but on the positive side - it's quite soothing (yawn)

*: which likely means it demands Javascript! However I don't like being dictated to; Javascript can be a nasty piece of work and it frequently trashes my PC.
