Hi

Just wondering if anyone could advise me

I want to set a site up, where people can customise a product on the site, Similar to a greeting card/ t- shirt customisation sites but not in that industry.

How expensive would this site cost compared to a standard website ?
Can a good web developer do this or would I need someone with more specific skills?

A good web developer can do this, you will most likely want someone good with both frontend and backend development. As for cost it really depends on how complicated the product is, how fancy the visuals are, how many customisations need to be made, etc. It could be as little as a few hundred quid, as much as your average marketing website or even higher depending on just how complicated your product is. The problem of course is finding a genuinely good developer. Research carefully, take recommendations, examine their portfolio carefully and most importantly ask for examples of similar bespoke work they've done.

There are some design scripts you can install. Most decent developers will be able to do this for you. The cost really depends on the fine detail - it could be £500 to £5000.

You can buy a template to build a website by yourself using wordpress, Joomla...
You also can try shopify, ecwid...
This is stupid advice. Please read the opening post again.

It'd depend whether you're asking the developer to build your whole website with that feature in it, or ask a developer to add it to your existing website.

If it's from scratch you could pay from 500 to 1500 for a one-off. If it's just adding the script, it could run up a couple hundred pounds.

Alternatively, you could bootstrap it. If you're crafty enough, you can surely find someone who has done the same type of modifications to their stores and learn how to apply them yourself. That'd take longer though, but you'd learn quite a bit.

There's plugins out there that integrate into WooCommerce to allow customers to customise products. There are a few different approaches too, like a simple text box for customisation or a full customizer with preview / proof etc.

"WooCommerce Custom Product Designer" on codecanyon ($50) looks like a good option to me, but that obviously would depend on what you're customising!

Yes, you definitely need a developer to make a custom site for you. I doubt they'd be any decent plugins that can already do exactly what you want it to do. Be best to get it done from scratch.

Many options if just website design or basic functionality but this job would most likely be a lot more complex by the sounds of it, especially if you want it done properly.

You need front end development which involves user control (UI). I would say you need to create a much better brief. I find the prices people have banded about hilarious, thats a train wreck about to happen unless this is a ridiculously easy customisation. I am talking about something like where you customise bodyshape and pick a tshirt or something that requires more than selecting a colour.

If it was T-shirts, you could use this for free:
    https://github.com/opentshirts/OpenTshirts

It might be that a good developer could take that and customise it for what you do.

As a general rule of thumb, if you want something similar to an existing open source platform, the cost increases as you stray away from the functionality of that platform.

So if your requirement is very similar, the cost should be low.

You have to be more analytical in all these types of needs for the candidate developer and get realistic prices. Ask your developer or the company that created your website about your needs. Research carefully for information and eventual experience for this kind of task.
