web properties

Now I know that the best links to get are highly relevant links for example a coffee shop being linked to by a coffee manufacturer (can you tell what I'm drinking).

However, this is not always as easy as it seems. Do you SEO guys have your own web properties that you use to link to the websites you're working on? Or is this professional suicide?

For example, do you have your own network of blogs, websites, directories etc that you own and use to link from? Or is that pretty pointless in the grand scheme of things?

It's not pointless, but if you're going to do it the right way, it's not affordable. Consider the time and money needed to create, promote and regularly update with original fresh content several web properties. This could only work if you were some sort of niche SEO, so if you specialize in SEO for lawyers and have only several really good websites for these keywords, but in this case, some will argue that having multiple clients competing for the same keywords in SERPS is kind of unethical for a SEO company.

In case you are supposed to do all kinds of websites' SEO, you would need o develop such a big number of websites that it would be almost physically impossible to pull the positive ROI out of it.

I see what you mean Toni, and yes that would explain why it's not common practise I guess. I presume running a blog on coffee or whatever is not going to realistically generate a high PR to boost the link value for a coffee shop link, and so as you say it's probably too much work to bother with.

If you run a coffee shop and a high profile visitor writes about the great cup of coffee and atmosphere on their blog then that link could be worth it's weight in gold.

It alse depends on what you hope to acheive from your shop. One assumes that you want peolpe to come in and buy a cup of something, handing out discount vouchers may be far more effective than getting visitors to your website.

I don't think he runs a coffee shop or has anything to do with coffee at all, he's just putting it as an example :D

I know but it would be the same for any enterprise. Get a good review from a respected site and this can easily cascade into all sorts of places:

You sell rubber bungs > movie starr uses one on his leaky orifice > blogs and twitters about it > celeb followers buy bungs > gets reported in lifestyle websites > you make lots of money > get invited onto breakfast TV to talk about celebrity bungs and stoppers > take part in celebrity big brother > fade into nothing

It can be affordable. Having been in the game for a few years is an advantage if you've been accumulating sites, either by building them up yourself or buying established ones. It's quite easy to build a portfolio of good sites. If you're careful about the subject, the sites needn't require regular upkeep either. Coffee is an ideal subject for both static content and "news".
