Web Design and Advert revenue

I have an idea for a web based service. I will need the site to have logins with restricted access to a data base and other bumf depending on their status as given by myself.

Can anyone give me ball park figures for creation and maintenance?

<I am considering learning how to do it myself but am worried i will have missed the boat by the time i'm up to speed>

Also, I will want to make revenue from the ads. I know the amount i charge will be proportionate to the number of visitors and whether they click on their ad or not, but how much are we talking about...

Lets say for example, 100 hits per day on my site, 10 clicks on ads?

Sorry about any math headaches received with this.

Hi Warren,

Re the ad price -it wouldn't just be a matter of how many hits (you should actually be looking at unique vistirs, not hits) you get - but also who the hits are from.

I'd pay more to advertise on a site that is visited by 500 small business owners everyday than I would a site that is visited by 3,000 expectant mothers everyday.

Whilst others would pay more to advertise on a site with 500 expectant mothers than 3,000 small businesses.

Re the quote to build - you'd need to be a lot mroe specific about your needs.

Hi Warren

We have done several sites with a mySQL database + secure log in and payment these are easy to do and always work very well. We have one that tracks Endowment claims, one that runs a large industrial engineering company who do work for most local councils in Oxfordshire. We can do whatever you want. We can also sort out other forms of revenue generation that you might need as well.

If I can have a little more information I can get some costs over to you.

Hello Warren

The amount of clicks you will get per visitor depends largely on two things:

1. How relevant the ads are - people are more likely to click on ads related to their original search.

2. How relevant the info on your page is to their original search. If your page gives them all they need to know, then they will not need to click on an ad.

Therefore, for every 100 visitors, you could usually get anywhere between 1 and 20 clicks on an advert.

It really is the old "how long is a piece of string".

There are several strategies on how to approach marketing on your site. You can go for generic adverts or the adsense type semi targeted ones where you know that there will always be a demand for your space but the rate paid/ rate of click through will be relatively low. At the other end of the spectrum is very tightly targeted marketing where you should achieve higher rates and greater click through rates but firstly you have to know a lot more about the visitors to your site and secondly if your topic is very small niche area then you may have difficulty finding sufficent companies to sell space to and end up not achieving the target rates due to the lack of competition.

As others have mentioned, your requirements are far too high level for anyone to be able to give any form of quote at this point. The "problem" which I have always had with the web design/ development sector is the immense ranges in prices (and quality of solutions). The highest prices arent necessarily going to be the best product as some see "development" rather than "design" and instantly double their hourly rate. At the other end of the market the cheapest can be false economy as do you really want to trust your business venture in the hands of a 16 year old school boy who may well totally lose interest after 6 months (or get grounded and not be allowed on line for a week). Then again there are some exceptionally good young/ overseas developers that will be very cheap but give a solution second to none.

I have always had sympathy for anyone wanting to move/ start their business online if they dont have inhouse capabilities to do it themselves.

If this is the case we would be in a position to offer a quote for requirements analysis - with no obligation regarding system development. This will produce a well defined specification that can be used to base the development on (and get much more accurate pricing). It's in everyone's interests to clarify what you need up front.

If you're interested PM me.
