VOIP Phone

Hi All

Looking for a good reliable VOIP.

I have Virgin media installed at home and this seems a feasible option rather than paing line rental for a second phone line.
i have been advised to look for a good DECT phone (what does this mean) and some high quality ATA hardware (again what is this)

I've been a Voipfone customer for around 2.5 years and the service has been great. You can buy phones from them that are already setup, so you can just plug it in and use it straight away. Call charges are 1p a minute to landlines and 10p a minute to mobiles.

We think that the best VoIP desk phone are in the snom range - the entry level snom 300 does pretty much all you need to do, is reliable and bullet proof.

If you need a wireless phone, you are correctly advised that DECT is the best choice - it just means that it uses wireless technologies (not WiFi). We've had dozens of VoIP DECTS over the years but we've found that it's only in the last year that they've become stable enough to rely on.

The Gigaset range (ex-Seimens) are the best (and a very good price too).

You should buy the phones from your service provider because they require configuration and you don't want arguments later about anything that isn't working properly.

Other desk phones that are pretty good are Yealink and Polycom.

Yes, you'll need to sign up to a VoIP provider to be able to send and receive calls from the outside world.

Well so far so good I have received excellent service from 'Matthew' on the website chat function so it looks like Voipfone will be getting a new happ customer (pending price checks)

They do, but you need a router that has the ability to distribute and manage the internet connection well (we recommend Draytek Vigor routers)

We switched at the end of last year and it has been faultless so far and very cost effective.

I'd certainly agree that the Gigaset IP DECT phones are great. I've installed several of these and use one as a business phone at home (on a Virgin Broadband connection) and it works very well. I'd also recommend Voipfone based on the number of people here that I know how use them and always provide great feedback about their service.

I'd agree with other posters - better to have a standalone VoIP phone rather than an adapter. As a rule, the cheaper VoIP phones from places like ebay, simply don't perform as you'd expect them to - sometimes call hold doesn't switch on/off as it should, slow to boot up and a variety of other issues that you simply won't find with handsets like Snom or others.

Not entirely convinced by the wireless offerings yet, even wifi at home can suffer speed drops, if you're serious about having a good conversation to potential clients, definitely try and keep it wired since VoIP is very sensitive.

We do a business solution at buzzbox.cc but that's geared more toward SMEs which is overkill for your purposes, however if you need a single line to play with drop me a line and we'll give you a test 0330 number and you can set up a basic softphone on your PC to test the call quality and a quid's worth of free credit. If it works out, we can pop a pre-configured phone in the post for you. They work behind firewalls too, so no fiddling with the router.
