VOIP Phone and Wireless Connection

Hi all

I have a quick query re VOIP phones which I am hoping someone can help me with.

My partner is in the process of setting up a new business which will be run from home and would like a second phone line in the house purely for the business. From research a VOIP phone seems the easiest (and cheapest) way to do this.

My query is about how this would work, she would like a "proper" phone, something like a Snom 300, however she currently works via wifi on her laptop and would like the phone to be beside her. The issue is that the router etc would all be on a different floor of the house to where she works.

In these circumstances, could she use the phone by plugging it into her laptop? And if she could, what then happens when her laptop is off - does that mean no phone?

Thanks in advance

I seem to remember a post a long time back that essentially said wireless and voip is not a good pairing - maybe go search for it

Are you mixing up skype with voip?

Have you considered a BT feature line or whatever BT call it - another number with a different ring on the same line for a few pounds extra pre month

Perfect sound compared with voip

We actually do voip to the feature line since the sound was to poor on pure voip - you really want a dedicated line not be busy surfing etc though routers with ?something I forget? in it can help improve things

Simple answer - buy voip dect phones :)

We bought a set of 3 Siemens S68H which are standard cordless phones - the base station plugs into your router and the phones work through dect to the base station and then IP through the wires across to your router / broadband / etc.

The phone also allows you to run normal BT phone line and voip in the same handset - the base station can handle one BT call and 2 IP calls simultaneously.

we use voipfone who are members on here...

Yup VoIP and WiFi are not a good combination - better to use DECT and the Siemens phones are good.

Voip is not the most reliable telephony solution you will find. The overall nature of IP can mean lost or delayed packages which could make a conversation a mess. Moreover voip over wifi, especially when you're getting poor signal because the router is far away, might cause you a lot of headache and you don't want dropped calls on a business line.

Thanks for the advice, I hadn't heard of DECT before so just learned something new!

Just to check I have understood correctly, if I buy a number from say voipfone and a DECT phone like the Siemens.

I would then be able to plug the base unit of the Siemens into my router and that would give me a second phone line in the house? Would there be much work in terms of setting this up (I am non techie!)

    Thanks

That's about right, there's no set up if you buy your phone from a proper company - it will be pre-configured by the service provider and should be plug and play. (If you buy it from a box shipper that doesn't provide the telephone service - you'll need to fiddle about a bit.)

We stopped selling Siemens DECT a year ago because they had some problems when the division was sold off but they seem to be sorted out again now - you won't find them on our site but you can call or email us and we'll ship them - 020 7043 5555 or support at voipfone co uk

I think that a lot of this can depend on your set up - we are fortunate to have high upstream broadband performance as well as down-stream. Coupled with a router which prioritises voip - ringfencing the capacity needed - we have had no issues yet :) We took Voipfone's advice in terms of needed bandwidth (100k per call top end) so ring-fence 300k for voip upstream - if not being used it is available to other use such as data, but if needed any uploads etc. will be throttled until the phone call is finished.

We then spent some time testing with calls and hitting the upstream with a variety of uploads / scenarios / etc. and were happy - we then put it live.

    So works well for us.

How did you get on?! I'm in exactly the same scenario and am wondering if you've installed your solution yet?
