VOIP Extension solution?

T

I'm currently working out forecasts for a new company I'm looking to start. I remember from the previous company I worked at, using BT for the telephone system proved to be very costly especially when more people joined and therefore more phone lines were needed. We ended up using BT Featureline and so had to pay extra line rental for each extra phone!

Therefore I'm looking into VOIP for the following solution:

Initially it would just be one line I would need then as more and more people join the company I would need to have extensions for each of those people and a unique telephone for each person. What I was therefore hoping that I could simply pay for one line rental as well as one lot of broadband and then add VOIP telephone numbers as and when they are needed. Is this possible and what kind of cost are we looking at each?

Any help would be much appreciated.

If you use a hosted solution - ie ours :), you can do that easily.

You need a broadband connection. Unless you use cable to provide that, you will also need an exchange line.

You can buy one phone number £1.99 pm (or use our free one) and one extension £0.99 pm. You can then add up to 800 extensions, one at a time for £0.99 each. You can add as many telephone numbers as you want too at £1.99pm, as DDIs.

You'll need a phone for each extension of course. You could use our free softphone but it's not a great business solution. Budget £80 for a phone or more if you want posh ones.

If you have a lot of people in one office using phones and internet heavily - say over 5 - you'll probably need to be thinking of anothe DSL connection too.

Thanks for this - that's great to know that the solution is available. I'll definitely be in touch when we have everything set up and ready to go. Just one more thing. If I had 3 people each requiring a direct line number and also have the ability to transfer incoming calls around those 3 people would I need 3 x numbers plus 3 x extensions?

If you need each extension to be diallable directly from outside the pbx group then yes, each extension needs its own number.

Otherwise you can have one number and it rings all the extensions or rings one extension and the receptionist directs the call (and variations of that). Or you plonk an IVR behind the number which says press 1 for Jo, 2 for Mary etc. (With this last one each department - Jo, Mary, Sales, accounts etc costs £0.99 pm.

You might want to have a quick read through this:

We use www.voicehost.co.uk and they have been excellent.

We have an office with 8 extensions on 1 ADSL line, but it's a good line with 8Mbps down and 1Mbps up... We've also set-up QoS on our router so calls are given priority, that way we can all of us be in calls at the same time AND some be browsing, without problem.

We actually found that the call quality was far BETTER on the VoIP system than it was using the 4 old BT lines that we had.
