VOIP Connection

I bought three SAFECOM SDSIP 5000 phones to use as VOIP and they will not connect.

Unfortunately I bought them from a rather clueless reseller... and he can't tell me what is wrong. They look brand new, but they simply won't connect. I am trying to connect to Voipfone. I'll change provider if they will only work with a different one. There is no password on them.

What do I do? Thank you!

Never come across the Safecom phones but what are you trying to connect the up to?
Who is your VoIP service provider (or are you using something like Asterisk or Trixbox)?
What is your current setup and what errors are you getting?

If you are behing a NAT router, try to get one working first. Once that is working, have a go at the other two (SIP phones can be tricky with NAT).

Have a look at Voipfones setup instructions for general settings here:

If you're trying to connect to Voipfone, I suggest you give us a call and ask

    020 7043 5555

Personally I don't know that phone and it's probable that the guys won't either but if it's a SIP standard device it will work once you've got it set up properly. If you can find a manual for it online that would help too.

If we really can't make it work (we try to get anything working but as we don't supply or support those phones we can't guarantee anything) you can ask on our forum here:

Our users seem to have tried pretty much every phone ever made.

I had a problem today setting up a VoIP phone and found out that it was actually the firewall which was blocking the outbound ports required by the service provider (which were UDP 5060 and UDP 5065). I also had to allow RTP ports (starting at UDP port 3000) for outbound access. It's jsut that they had their firewall fairly tightly locked down.

I've spent half a day on the phone to VOIPfone last week, but they had to give up too, in the end. We've done everything recommended in the manuals, too. I'll try disabling the firewalls to get them set up initially.

    Here's hoping!

Do be careful doing that, if you get it wrong you expose the phone to the nasty outside world. If you do get it working, give us a call and ask if we can scan you - just to be sure.

Does your firewall have a log that you can check to see which traffic it has blocked? If so you might see some traffic blocked for UDP port 5060 (or 5065 if you are using voipfone's SIP proxy server). How far do you get? Does the phone manage to register with the service or does it not get that far?
