Vista Vs Windows..?

I am planning to buy new laptop but little confused with operating system so please share your experience which os I should go for..?

I've got a few systems running Vista 64 and 32bit and it's absolutely "the worst" operating system I've ever used, too many problems and issues to mention. Just about to swap over to Windows 7, it really can't be as bad and the reviews I've read have all been positive.

I'm an Apple convert, prefer my Mac sooo much more than my old PC, thanks to my new job for converting me and making my life so much quicker!

But I've played with Windows 7, it's alright, nothing special, but works ok.

I have a lappy running Vista quite happily now the SPs are out.

As most laptops are now being sold with W7 there are some bargains to be had with older ones preloaded with Vista, (and if you are lucky you might also get a cheap upgrade to W7). Worth a thought.

(Also might be worth waiting for Jan sales, or the Sales between Xmas and New Year-in case Darling/Brown decide on a wee New Years day VAT increase pressie to all of us.)

Haha you know I used to be totally against Macs?! Hate hate hated the thought of them.... mind you at home I'm still happy on my laptop, and that's running on vista and a slow broadband connection!

I have vista on a decent dual core laptop, I dont like it...... that spinning circle all the time..... XP was so much faster.....

Companies like Dell are a good barometer as to what OS to go for. They are currently shipping with Windows 7 and charge to downgrade to Vista. Why anyone would want to do that I do not know. Vista has been a disaster for Microsoft, the lack of compatibility with peripherals and bespoke software like law firm packages that cost thousands of pounds to upgrade has seen the quick release of Windows 7. Steve Ballmer the CEO of Microsoft has went on record to say that Vista was a work in progress (sorry forum wont let me post the link to the article that backs this up) and they have learnt a lot of lessons from it.

I would go for Windows 7 to be honest, personally I use Windows XP, I have missed out Vista. I am currently testing Windows 7 and will probably move over completely in the next few months.

 

Windows 7 is vastly superior to Vista (but so is dog waste tbh).

The worst thing about Vista is, though we all know its carp, the rest of us will have to support it for a few years yet.

XP will be quickly withdrawn now that W7 is out, M$ had been threatening to o this when Vista was released, but even they didn't realise how much people would hate it.

I would love to sit someone down from M$ one day and ask them what they thought they were creating with this 'Startup Repair' option on Vista.... what exactly was it there to repair, cos it certainly fixes nowt for me

Anyways, digression, buy a machine with W7 on it now. It will be the OS of choice for non-mac fanboys from now on really. It is quite sleek, and much faster than Vista. Obviously there will be lots of little problems come to light with it, as with all OS, but it definitely is a vast improvement.

I'v been testing Windows 7 on a laptop and one of the PCs at work and it is a much stabler system than Vista.

I wouldn't say it is much quicker but it is more intuitive, networking etc. is much easier to get working. It has borrowed some ideas from Apple which is no bad thing (I do love my iPhone - very sad I know)

We still have most of the PCs at work on XP but at the next upgrade I will have no hesitation in using Windows 7.

 

hehe, I have been setting up a few new laptops this week for Xmas pressies etc, and I was a little shocked by the size of updates needed for W7 machines already.

An Acer I have on the bench needed 38 updates, total size of 994Mb.... I cannot remember even Vista needing anything quite that big

Definitely W7 is quicker, and sleeker, but I'm not sure it is any faster than XP really. These new laptops are all realistically spec'd to suit Vista (as most manufacturers under-estimated how slow it was when it came out, and upped their basic spec accordingly. Now, since we have a 'normal' OS, the high spec makes it appear all the more fast.

W7 is a definite improvement on Vista as far as speed is concerned, and I haven't really had many in for repairs just yet (Vista had lots of problems initially, and still does regularly), but its early days yet.

Why exactly are there spurios OSX/Mac comments all over this thread btw, considering the OP asked about Windows?

Oh, and please don't be thinking that, since W7 is out, you need to be upgrading all your existing XP machines..... no reason at all to be doing that, why fix something which isn't actually broken?

There are some decent bargains to be had with laptops, as Dawg said earlier in the thread, so have a good look around the moment we get Xmas out of the way, and you'll pick up a decent lappie at a decent price.

Totally hate vista and i hate IE8 too as I ned to use the compatibility buttom too much... ridiculous!

I am beginning to hate windows altogether - so i'm changing to Mac but have no idea what I'll make of it but it cannot be as bad as my others PC's here that all let me down in one direction or another!

Win 7 is fine.

Vista really was a pretty cynical move by M$ - it was released just to keep an income stream after they cocked up their development and realised they had another 24 months before the proper OS would be ready. Even so it was a long way from the worst they've done; Windows 95 anyone?

XP is also fine.

Yep, agreed cjd... And I think XP is fine too. I took my vista off my stand-by laptop and replaced with XP - however, its never been the same tbh!

I would have to say that you are wrong when it comes to Microsofts OS, the worst one they did was Windows ME, now that was the pits of an OS.

Perhaps it will say more about you than macs. Lets remember 90% of the people out there choose windows. I've used macs for years (had an old black and white mac classic years ago and then an imac when the first came out, and now have one of those white mac cubes running OSX) but I still love PCs... I've never had a virus or been hacked and don't find macs any more stable. They are much more expensive of course (but then again I've often bought expensive PCs like Alienware and Dell XPS too. But at least I have option for cheap too (the Lenovo netbook I'm on now cost 999Dirhams/150quid new in Dubai)

What utter tosh. Windows is great for software development, that is why it really took off. People use windows for pretty much everthing, that is why its ubiquitous.

I'm not knocking macs, but this trendy windows bashing just bores me. Its like the people who go on about betamax being better all the time.

Windows 7 is fine, seems to be fine anyways, and it is definitely quicker than Vista. No reason at all now to be buying a PC with Vista (unless you get a great deal of some sort) and also no reason to be upgrading from XP to W7 unneccesarily either.




Or you could just buy a machine with no OS, and install Linux Mint

Got Vista 32-bit on my desktop its extremely stable. It never ever ever crashes. Athlon 4200 X2, 2GB RAM, 500GB HD so not exactly high spec either.

I run Linux (combination of Mint and Ubuntu) on my other systems and my official business systems will all run MINT.

I find Ubuntu and MINT far far nicer than OSX.

If we are going to be picky the title is "Vista Vs Windows..?":

The title ends with an ellipsis which indicates something purposefully left out. In this cast the OP left out "7".
So the OP not only knows Vista is a Windows OS, knows that Windows 7 is an OS, but is supposing that there may be future Windows OS with another suffix, for instance Windows Pane.

To me the OP is asking what OS people would recommend and is stating he/she is clueless to the options. I haven't used Windows for years so if the OP is simply wanting to know which version to use I have no input to offer.
If the question is indeed open to any OS, I like OSX and find it stable and intuitive and prefer it to XP which is the last Microsoft OS I used.
The many versions of Linux seem to have a lot of fans, but if the OP is quite technophobic (as the initial post implies) I think it may be best avoided as it seems to appeal more to those looking to tweak it to suit them.

Hmmmm, not really sure why some people get all brave and want to argue for no reason on forums.

If the OP is specifically interested in Windows and no other OS, the general consensus seems to be that Vista is best avoided. As XP is getting on now that would indicate that 7 is the way to go.

Unless the OP has access to a Goodnight Sweetheart style time portal future versions of Windows are probably best bought in the future.

I bought my laptop a month before Windows 7 got released, So come with Vista with a free upgrade to Windows 7 when it was released.

Windows 7 is now installed and i really like it looks very sleek and is much faster to load than Vista.
