Hi everyone.

Im looking for a supplier of Playstation 3 games and Xbox 360 games.
I want to spread my wings a bit and get into a new line of work, So i thought why not test my self in the video games market.

Can anyone reccommend any suppliers?

It's also something I have been curious about.

Play dot com seem to have great low prices and they do not charge postage - I've oten wondered where they get their goods from.

Ive got in touch with a few wholesalers that supply them but they will not give you any prices until you open a account with them. It seems they have something to hide ( eg there prices are not as good as they claim ). And, when you open a account you have to place a minimum order of £200. But they wont give you prices upfront. Hmm.
Scam if you ask me.

If i sold a product for a good price, I would definately have it printed all over the place.

I think i will ask sony HO.

Im answering my own question here.
It states in their terms & Con's;

Your contract for purchases made through the Site is with Play.com, and you undertake that any and all goods ordered by you are for your own private and domestic use only.

Yes the prices are good if you want to buy retail but not if you want to sell them on.
And if you were to buy from them, how would you match their prices?

At least in the early days, play.com used to buy unsold stock from the big supermarkets (I heard about some copies still having ADSA stickers on the DVD).

As for the wholesalers, I guess that a lot of them want to avoid small scale eBay sellers etc. and focus on the big markets hence the £200 min order and lack of listed prices. This might also be stipulated in their contracts with the suppliers.

There are a few people on here who deal with Video Games im sure and they will be able to offer alot more insight!

I think alot of it is to do with Volume like most things in retail (any most things)!
Wholesalers (in the businesses ive dealt with) usually put a minimum to stop people buying for them and friends and so its more serious buyers/business people

I got in touch with a sales rep at sony. I told him I wanted to buy games in bulk but the business team wouldn't deal with me. They didn't even want to know how much i was planning to spend.
The sales rep gave me the details of one of their main distributors. This distributor was one I had previously got in touch with and was waiting for a reply. So I contacted the distributor again and got a price list sent out. Turns out they are a load of ****. Playstaion 3's (the console, not the games) that you would only make £8 on, and thats if you sell them top whack ( RRP £299.99 ) and royal mail will deliver it for free.
And I add, these prices are not much better when you tell them you will buy in bulk. Maybe if you buy in bulk you could break even.

So, I ask you all "Is this a market that is nearly impossible to get into unless your willing to spend a couple of million £, so that Sony will give you the time of day?"

Tommorrow I will contact Sony again and be a bit more pushy to find out if they have a minimum spend rule etc. Hopefully they will take me a bit more seriously.

I will Keep you all posted.

Oh and if anyone has had any better look, let me know.

The margins are as tight as films. Look at the Grand Theft Auto series selling 8 million copies in an month.

There are something like 30+million PS2's still out there and being used.

I would look at the top five publishers and speak to the marketing department to find disti's or wholesalers.

The margin is going to be low on retail PS3 games as BluRay disc's are expensive to produce. The Xbox360 might be slightly better as MS make subsidy revenue from online play. The WII will be tough as well as the depth of games arent there but it does mean that when games come out or someone sees one they havent got they will buy it.

The CVG market is changing although "they now make more than holywood in revenue" the productions costs for these games especially AAA are between 30 million and 100 million.

There are a couple of channel gaming websites out there that will have links to Games companies, Publishers and retail/supply chain.

Guys, Margins are really tight in this market and on ocassion I see supermarkets selling below cost price compared to what I get from the distributors.

An example of this, Game the leading specialist in our sector two year's ago posted pre-tax profits of 6m off of revenue £849m. and last year was a bit better £30m off of £1.4bn but they have a monopoly after buying out GameStation. When the market leader is getting less than 1% net margin, what hope has the little guy got?

Me, I operate in the pre-owned area where margins are much better but turnover is is a lot lower.

Think really hard if you want to get into this market, you'll either need an amazing USP or a very deep pockets and a lot of capital if you are to survive.

£8 a PS3 is about right, the Wii was about £6 but you could sell it for tons more when it first came out. Sony & Microsoft actually make a loss on each unit they sell that's why there is only a token amount for the retailer. They make their money on the game sales, but margins aren't particularly much better there either.

Video gaming is a tight margin business to get into - the likes of play and amazon buy in such large quantities they get mass bulk discounts. Being based in jersey also helps with the tax side of it!

The supermarkets gradually moving in to the space arent helping either - they sell their games at a loss knowing that the people coming in will buy other stuff. THis makes them cheaper than the likes of game and gamestation who have bulk discounts too so independent games stores like us have no chance unless we are clever . a lot of games stores buy their stock from tescos as they are cheaper than the prices from official distributors are often offering to individuals and small trade!!

Its a difficult industry to move in - but can be done - if you want any more tips, dont hesitate to ask. Maybe there is something we can work on that would benefit both of us? Not sure. But good luck in everything

How do you base your company in jersey. Do you have to have a office there?
What are the benefits ( tax ) ?
Are you in the gaming market?
If you are then we could chip in together to buy bigger. Gets the prices down.
We could just explain to the supplier that we come as one. But they have to take two seperate payments, etc :)

Hi.

I been searching the internet trying to find good priced suppliers of video games, but can`t find any good ones, for example one supplier through simplywholesale was asking £42.74 for a PS3 PAL (UK) game that retails £49.99 when you can buy it of ebay for £30? :eek: and some other suppliers were asking £30-35 now work that one out ? :|, so i`ve always wondered where they source there stock from and how much traders on ebay are paying for there games. and yes there are alot of traders selling US NTSC imported games for as little as £15 :D !!! and again how much are they getting them for ? £10 or less ?

I buy alot of imports but the only problem is that some games will be in black and white unless you have a NTSC compatible
TV (60Hz)
and some HD TV`s still have some problems aswell but 90% work fine.

I have a couple of suppliers that I use and buy in games from every now and again they are not based in the UK though.

Have actually sold some on Play.com and made a profit!!!
