Hi all,

A. Just wondering how valuable it is to be put video content on your site

B. Would you create separate pages for each video, to help with SEO

C. Any other pointers on doing videos?

Hi Jon,
Hope you're keeping well. Video on your website amounts to great content, which the search engines love. Also, by putting your video up on Youtube and having a link back to your website in the description provides a very useful backlink. Plus a Youtube video can get you free traffic to your site for years to come.

It depends on what you are promoting. With your lettings business all you really need is a video on the home page, which explains what you do. If you don't want to get in front of the camera yourself, then it could be in the form of a sales letter video with a few images of yourself, your office and some properties here and there.

The SEO benefit comes from having rich content on your site so I don't think it matters how you arrange it. From a user experience point of view, the video content needs to align with the overall page content - so for example you could put a general company introduction on the home page and then put clips aimed at specifically landlords or tenants in the Landlords Zone or Tenants Zone as appropriate.

If you host the clips on YouTube, don't forget to add suitable title, description and tags to help with searchability.

It depends if the videos provide content that adds value to your site. Don't just add videos for the sake of it. Good videos (which don't necessarily need to be expensive/professional ones) will, among other things, increase the amount of time that people spend on your site, which I believe is an important factor in SEO.

It's probably best to put each video on a different page. It depends how closely related they are. If you put them on separate pages then you can optimise each page to rank for a different keyword.

  • Don't make them overly promotional.
  • Spend time promoting them after uploading them to your site and to YouTube.

Hello Jon,

Think about your own choice as if you were going to get something from two particular websites among which one contains video and another does not have. The answer will be congenial to the website that has videos. Yes, we are likely to be persuaded by videos as it provokes a feeling in us through visualization process.

You can also use separate pages for each video so that all your videos convey specific messages. You might have known to the fact that success of SEO depends mostly on rich contents and valuable knowledge base for the readers. So, videos are not much essential in this regard.

To give you an idea of what you get for 3K, the video on my website (Aimspray.co.uk) cost just under 3k. It was shot in HD (1k for professional cameraman). I paid for the venue, catering, extras, and etc (600). The editing was another 1K, Misc. software and web licenses £240. So that’s what you get for 15 secs of video. I shopped around, and got quotes of up to 25K!! Ask to see their work, and question costs. 25K will get you known actors and a good soundtrack, and 3k won’t! But I am happy with the results, its turned browsers to buyers by +8%.

To say video is not essential to SEO might have been true a few years ago but not any longer. Videos are very important for SEO! Why do you think Google includes them in the general search results? I agree with the comments above on including videos as a part of your SEO strategy. However, don't put any important information in the video that's not available elsewhere on your website. The video should complement your content, but it adds a personal touch to it that you cannot put in writing, especially if you go in front of the camera.

We work fora few local estate agents producing videos using their phoptographs of properties and adding some graphics, text, music and movement just using a very inexpensive editor that just cost £50 and its so easy to use and yet you can produce great videos. Our estate agents then ask us to put the videos onto youtube which can get mega hits.

And at the other extreme I went for an economy version and my video cost me under £100

I wanted a video only for SEO purposes so went with the pretty boring subject of "choosing a factoring company" but rather than drone on and send everyone to sleep I elected for what I hoped would be a rather novel approach.

If you Google "Choosing a factoring company" the YouTube video comes third whilst my blogs and websites that contain the video give me two more sites on page one of Google

For a £100 that's a nice video,looks to be rotoscoped.It's easy to do,green screening makes the job way easier by keying,go over the footage after keying as it sometimes removes parts you don't want removed.Export as RGB+alpha keeping sound.Place onto background of your choice.You can add various transitions for your slides.An iphone 4s or better can give results if you get the lighting right.
I'm a believer of an animated logo before these sorts of presentations for branding.

Whilst it's good for seo it can generate leads(hence the intro logo for branding),youtube is the 2nd most used search engine so don't underestimate it's potential for sales.

AVI files are pretty big - I'm guessing this is what your camera created? If you use a video editing application to save the video as an H.264/MPEG4 file it should be much smaller and upload quicker.

Regarding your video - the plus points are that you come across well on camera and a prospective client will get a really good idea of the type of guy you are and hopefully will want to do business with you. The length of the video is also fine.

Unfortunately, I was distracted by the movement of the hand-held camera and although I could hear you ok, your voice was quite echo-ey because you used the built-in microphone on the camera and there was a lot of background hiss.

Because the camera is low, you are looking down into the lens which has the subconscious effect of making the viewer feel like you are talking down to them (adult to child). Although the video is nice and short, there is only one shot throughout which doesn't help to keep the viewers attention.

Finally, the ending feels quite abrupt; it would be good to think about the message that you want to leave with the viewer and finish with a screenshot of your logo and contact details.

Pretty much what DPMB-VIDEO has said.I would have the logo in the top right,intro logo as well,all adds professionalism.

I would alpha channel you logo e.g remove the white background so you have the text and superman only.You could make quite a cool logo intro with that and it'll look alot better in the top right than a white rectangle.

Here is one I did for a restaurant,it's just the intro but it'll give you an idea what an intro is you'd have this then go straight into the video.

I don't know whether it helps SEO, to be honest. I can't see Google being able to scan the actual video for what the content is about (unless they can?), but they may score your webpage higher if it simply contains a video and therefore contributes to the content by simply being on the page.

From a sales conversion point of view, it entirely depends what sort of information the video contains and how it interacts with the sales copy. Videos used for sales purposes should really be made by someone with not only technical skills, but also an understanding of sales psychology and sales conversion as a whole.

PS: Youtube videos are a different kettle of fish. If you can get the actual video ranked high in Google for your target keywords then it can help bring in target prospects.

So if the same video is used on every page of the website would that be classed as duplicate content ? also if you used other peoples videos on your site would that also be classed as duplicate ? and would Google promote or penalise your site if you used this method ?

I never realised that Glen and will be giving it a go to see how it works. We have less than 10% of the traffic that looks beyond the home page of our site that actually bother looking at the video.

There's no point in putting the same video on every web page but a different one on each page yes. Video is engaging and keeps people on your pages longer. Whatever is written in text can be said or displayed in a video, so if you want people to read your message make it a video instead or as well as.

It's okay to use other people's videos on your site as long as the content is relevant and you have their permission. That's why Youtube provides embed code so people can share videos. And Youtube CAN scan the video for content including soundtracks and voiceovers.

As far as I'm aware the answer would be no. Google owns Youtube and Youtube encourages users to share content. Google also ranks videos and includes them in the search results. Google loves video!

I would suggest not putting videos on a website that make noise automatically, it gives me a shock each time and in my opinion is more likely to make people close the page than anything else.

There are so many benefits to creating a video for your website both from an SEO and promotional perspective. Is it a great way to get your message across and capture peoples attention instantly as people these days are turned off by lots of copy (something I will be making sure is done on my site when we launch).

Content is king!

I would suggest creating different videos for each page that are relevant to the areas of your company which potential customers are landing on. Not only is this great for conversion, but Google loves a mix of content and it doesn't hurt that they own You Tube also ;) I would say to be cautious when putting the same video on multiple pages as Google may see this as duplicate content also.

Remember to include keywords in your description and tags, as well as a link back to your site. Infact a lot of people use You Tube as a search engine in it's own right.
