Uncomfortable Sunbed? Problem solved!

Hello,

I was on holiday in a typical popular Spanish resort last month and the hotel had the usual plastic sun beds which you may have found are quite uncomfortable after sitting on them for an amount of time. Even putting a beach towel on the sun bed doesn't really help as it doesn't provide any padding or support. Whilst sunbathing (uncomfortably) i had a thought, why isn't there a product out there to place on a sun bed to make it more comfortable? I've had a little brainstorm since my holiday and wondered if its possible for a blow up mattress type product (again, i'm purely brainstorming!) with a towelling fabric covering the top for extra comfort/cosmetic purposes to be produced, and would it actually work?

My provisional thoughts are that the mattress will be a blow up/pump up design. I thought this would be ideal due to transporting the product easily. e.g. If its sold in airports/retail shops/online it needs to be slim and can be thrown into a suitcase/hand baggage easily.

As sun beds have the top quarter which can be moved up or down (for your head to rest on) i think the mattress will have a crease or fold in it somewhere, so it will fit nicely to the sunbed's layout.

I'd like the sun bed to ideally have a towelling material on top for comfort and cosmetic purposes.

My main problem is the following -

1. Heat - I would need a material which can stand high temperatures of heat as the mattress could be used worldwide.

2. Adhering to the sun bed - I don't know how the mattress would attach to the sun bed, as it could be dangerous if its simply placed on top?!

I'm looking for general feedback on this idea, and any help that anyone can give me! Would you use one?

Thank you for reading,

Felicity

Like most new inventive ideas, this is an old idea !
I had something like you are describing, back in the mid 1980's
It was called a Li-Lo.
Trademark name.
A pump up multi-segmented mattress, about 1800 mm x 750 mm wide, and pumped up from flat to 120 mm thick.

This particular one was made from a heavy gauge Neoprene type of material, and had a thick, light brown, furry type of covering glued
( looked as if it was sprayed on ) to the base Neoprene, which prevented you from sticking to the plastic in the hot sun.

Problem was with the furry material, it was quite hot to lay on, and still needed a damp towel on top of it to keep you cool.

The other problem was that the mattress was quite heavy and bulky when deflated and rolled up, and along with the air pump, was not very light and convenient to carry around in the luggage.

Probably the reason why the product faded away from the market, and everyone went back to the towels !

Or go to a resort where they don't have cheap uncomfortable sun loungers.
