I am trying to log into the hmrc government gateway account - entered my USER ID, forgotten password so Ive clicked the link for forgot password - received an email code which Ive entered and now....TAADAAA 'ENTER THE CODE ON YOUR AUTH APP'.....
first ive heard of this....my friend had to download an auth app to see her work wageslips but her employer had a recommended one. There seems to be a lot of auth apps ariund, some free, some arent but I have no idea about getting one or how I would link it to hmrc without the password ( rinse and repeat...the entire reason I apparantly need to get this auth code is because I havent got my password

Not sure I see any relevance to your friend and her payslips.

It sounds like you set up a two factor authentication using an App. Search through your phone Apps to find it. Normally you need this for all logins ( with a seven day grace) regardless of whether you forget the password.

any of them will do. Search the app or play store on your phone.

no real relevance other than she had a recommended app and as I dont have an employer to recommend one I wouldnt know where to start looking
I believe, but may be wrong, that if it is expecting you to get the code from the App then you would have had to have registered one at the time and used it to verify. Thus why I am suggesting you may already have it on your phone or perhaps removed it.

Its been a bit of a nighmare, I found the app on my phone and it does work as I had a Stripe payment recently, a code was sent to the app. But yesterday I tried hmrc again, bot the email 'enter the code sent to you auith app and there wasnt a code sent.

it all depends on how you set everything up when you created your one.gov account. Have you tried calling HMRC?

some slight success, or so it seemed....I was having no luck at all with auth app, passwords, user ID etx. So on the hmrc log in page I selected 'create new sign in details' . This generated a new gateway user ID and allowed me to put a new password in. So far so good...opted for access codes via tex so no need for authapp
Go to log in with aforementioned new credentials...
'YOU ARE ALREADY MANAGE YOUR TAXES, DUTIES AND SCHEMES ONLINE, YOU MUST HAVE ADDED THEM TO ANOTHER ACCOUNT, YOU NEED TO SIGN IN TO THAT ACCOUNT...

FINALLY sorted...turns out it was due to me registering for self employment about 20 years ago but never actually went into self employment - this registration was still logged so thats why i couldnt access the account i started in 2024.
Had to speak to three different agents because each agent can only deal with one enquiry. First one said I was set up incorrectly and I had to phone a different department, then I spoke to THE most helpful person ever! Then I had to call again to get the auth app changed to access codes via my phone!
Phew! Three phone calls and once I had got through the opening multi option menu, I got through to each one straight away!
