I have just had an E Mail from E Bay saying that because my E Bay account has had over £1700 in sales I must give my NI number and they are to give my details to the HMRC.
In my own case the only reason the amount is over £1700 is because I sold my wife's car on her behalf as she has no E Bay account (nor, obviously, any feedback). I am slightly concerned this is going to cause me problems with the HMRC, particularly as I do run my own mail order business (though ironically, it does not sell on E Bay ! ). Has anyone else had this issue ?
But this has all got me thinking, even if it had been my car what business is that of the HMRC anyway ? What next, charging me tax on selling stuff I no longer need for my home ? ! ?

Ebay has to report to HMRC - Money Laundering. It's common knowledge crooks use ebay to transfer money seamlessly. We have all seen adverts for everyday items like old playstations where people are asking huge amounts of money for a bit of kit worth a couple of hundred. The drug dealers buy a play station for £1500. Both ends record a great sale, the money moves. If you go to your bank and take out a grand - you get the third degree. The authorities follow the money. HMRC require them to take due diligence on their transactions.
