Trying (and failing) to get my point across!

Does anyone have any good tips on trying to persuade people to see a particular point of view?

I always thought I was quite good at influencing people and explaining what I meant but I’ve come across some people who just seem to refuse to see what I’m saying. I’ve found a few pointers (http://ow.ly/bFKw1) but wondered if anyone had anything else?

I want to try everything before I conclude that the people I’m talking to are idiots!

you should see opinions as a good thing and not dismiss. How many people are against your point of view ?

I didn't actually say I was right or that they were wrong. In the context of the discussion I am having with them there is no right and wrong.

I said I was trying to get them 'to see a particular point of view' - they don't have to agree with it.

As to the idiot question, I was actually trying to avoid coming to the conclusion that they were idiots and wondered if anyone here may be able to help me by giving me any tips on how I might approach a discussion so that it has the best chance of being effective with everybody understanding all the issues at the end of it so that a decision can be made.

I figured there must be some people on here who have had to explain difficult concepts to colleagues before and who may have some guidance as to how they did it.

Top tip LISTEN. Actually listen to what they are saying, rather than try to convince them about what YOU want to say.
