I do wonder if hosts have more info than members of the public get in relation to whois info etc.

I have been looking at several domains. I cannot find any info but I know the domain brokers are able to get in contact with the owners (even if not same host)

Am I missing something?

Hosts and domain registrars would generally have the contact info, unless they run anonymous hosting company. This especially applies to domain registrars, as WHOIS data is required to be correct, even if it's hidden using ID protection services.

I'm not sure if I understood you. If by domain broker you mean the same as 'domain registrar', then that information is provided to them upon registering the domain. If that's not what you meant, please elaborate on what you count as 'domain broker', and I'll see if I can explain in a different way that's easier to understand.

Yes - you (the end user) can't. Domain registrars have that info, but you can't access it. The original question was "I do wonder if hosts have more info than members of the public". Yes, they do. The public doesn't.

domain broker - somebody that sits in the middle and negotiates on price. Like an estate agent.

The brokers who work for the hosting companies must have special access to a database that public cant see. Its the only way

If they work for the registrar (not the hosting company) they will have access to the data. If they don't work for a registrar they don't have the info. What they do is buy expired domains and auction them off.

If it's an old domain, there's lots of old archived pre GDPR info out there.

As a UK Registrar, I can tell you, you are not missing anything.

The only people who can see the full contact details of a domain are:
1. The customer (Registrant) of the domain name.
2.. The customer's registrar, (Us for example) as we are required to ensure and validate the contact details to ensure they are correct and accurate and the governing registry. (Nominet for example)
3. A domain broker who has been asked to sell a customers domain name, and so will then have the customers details, and likely require the domain transferred to them in order to sell it.

Pre "GDPR" registrations you may find records of online, but not for UK domains as Nominet simply hid every WHOIS records as soon as GDPR kicked in, but ICANN didn't seem to.

Depends on the tag. There are bulk registrars and there are private domain investors, both Nominet members and both tag holders.

Nominet Whois will give you the tag holder, many of whom are well known.

Yes, exactly.

For UK Hosts / Registrars depending on how you've set your system up to operate within GDPR, if your client is opted in for relevant emails, open up a support ticket with the host / registrar and ask them to forward your information on to their client, In many cases they will & again if it is inline with what their customer has already agreed to. Most Hosts/Registrars wouldn't refuse a reasonable request like this but If you're approaching Giants, you'd probably get some pushback sure.
