Hello,

Is there are tool out there that tells you exactly what position your site is for searches and keywords. I would like to be able to see what page the sites comes for keywords in google, rather than trawl through the results.

Thanks.

Never underestimate the power of manual checking - simply seeing ranking positions tells you nothing about the context, what's happening to competitors, and even new link or traffic opportunities.

All of which the creative human brain can pick up on manually, but tools will never tell you about.

I wanted to check the Google position of my website, and maybe improve and get higher. I haven't been able to find it manually.

Applications like this tend to be for Windows machines. I have Windows, but mostly use my Mac because I'm used to it.

I agree. But a tool allows you to do a quick check and then verify later when you got time. :)

I am not sure how accurate this tool is because Google has many data centres inthe USA and throughout the world. The UK results are fine but the results it delivers for Google.com are quite different from what I am seeing when I search it myself.

Rank checking tools have so many limitations that they are only any good for a rough estimate. The main limitation is they only report on the keywords you choose which may not be the keywords everybody else uses. Another issue is personalised search, it is very unlikely that you will ever se the same results as me. You should also not forget that google my feed you false results as using an automated tool is not permitted under their TOC.

Of course, but we already know that don't we - I mean how could it report on keywords you don't choose? The use of tools like this assumes that the user has some basic understanding of keyword research.

Google used to provide an API that could be used for automated search. AFAIK they no longer do so but those that they issued still work. The companies that do this may be using these. Also, I understand that there are ways of automatically querying google that cannot be detected by them.

FelixSilver... thanks for the tip. I used Rank Checker and it seems to work fine. I found my website using key phrases such as "best web design deal" that may not be used by a lot of people, but it was a phrase on my website's home page and it may have some potential. At least, it gives me a start. It turns out that I'm on page one of yahoo UK for that key phrase, but hardly anyone will use that phrase... What I want is to be on page 1 of google for the term "web design" or "website design" which has a lot of people searching, and it's a serious challenge... not sure how to proceed, but will try... I also downloaded a trial version of Advanced Rank Checker... Thanks again.

Fair enough but longtail searches account for a high percentage of searches so buy concentrating on a limited selection you may well be focussing on he wrong search parameters

There are ways but most of the rank checking tools don't use them. In any case:
Don't use unauthorised computer programmes to submit pages, check rankings, etc. Such programmes consume computing resources and violate our Terms of Service. Google does not recommend the use of products such as WebPosition Gold™ that send automatic or programmatic queries to Google.

Yes, I am fully aware of Google's terms in this regard but since this rank checker is available as a Firefox download I think we can assume that Google considers it to be pukka. Firefox is already in bed with Google.

Not focussing, just checking.

I wouldn't. Extensions are written by coders because that's what they enjoy doing, I don't believe there is any form of endorsement, even by Mozilla.

How do mean google is in bed with Firefox - don't they prefer Chrome?

does anyone know if cleverstat allows you to see if any page on the domain shows up for the keyqord not just the home page?

It should pick up the first page from your domain which is listed. Once you have run the report, if you click on the keyword it will give you a list of all the sites, if you think there is an error it's pretty easy to check through, presuming there aren't loads of keywords and results.
