Hi,

Can anyone recommend some software (preferably free) for downloading entire websites from their homepage, onto our hard drive for offline browsing.

We are off on holiday next week, camping in Devon by the coast and it would be really good to have all the local websites I can find loaded onto the lappy before we go. Attractions, local events, pubs, maps, walks, beaches, stuff for the kids, etc.

Any help or pointers is appreciated.

A lot of the websites you are talking about are all generated dynamically so are built on the fly from a database.

The only thing I can suggest is either get a cheap PDA or 3g phone and connect to the internet that way. This will mean you can search the net for local attractions that are going on that day.

HTTracker

I use it all the time, as it allows me to download a website exactly as the browser sees it, even if it php, asp etc.

It spiders through the site in a very short time, and downloads all the pages it can find.

And its free! :)

I was looking around for something like this a couple of months ago and couldn't find anything that would pick up the dynamic site so ended up buying a PDA to use :(

In my naughtier days we used to use WinHTTrack to spy on the competition. Have fun Keith.

Just curious, how you spy on people with it, as it just copies what a browser would see and the way it sees it. So in theory there is nothing different from using this tool or browsing the site your self?

The only problem (with the version i use at least) is it cant download restricted member access pages, such as members only sections of a site.

The best thing about this for what we use it for all the time, is image collecting. We produced a site where we needed to input 2000 products in their site from the manufacturers site. So we spidered the site, which collected all the images and then just dumped the whole lot on our clients site via FTP, and then told then to add each product, and just link the image :D
