Hi,

Can anyone provide me with some suggestions in building a information-providing blog using WORDPRESS?

Any reading materials/experts' blogs that could help me to better start with it?
It seems that ppl build really nice websites from that

For the novice it's mostly about finding the best template for the job.

On to that you might concider plugin for extra features but don't add a plugin you don't really need and delete those you don't use.

Consider the best way to use the menu system, by defining customer menus to meet your needs unless you use the default categories. For example if your site uses "countries" as categories you could, create customer menus for UK, Europe, Rest of the world. These then you add the countries to and by showing them as custom categories in the side bar you've already helped the visitor by separating those parts out.

Don't worry about SEO or sitemaps etc till you have the site site up as you want it with content.

Those links are the ones we'd normally suggest.

Youtube also has some good tutorials if you'd prefer something a bit more visual. Just search Wordpress tutorial and you should find lots of helpful videos.

If you have the budget and can't find a free theme you like, then you can look for premium ones at theme forest. They typically cost about 20-40 pounds, and can give you a very professional look on a budget.

I wouldn't worry too much about getting it perfect to start off with either. Start writing content and posting articles, and you can slowly iterate and improve it when you see what works and what you like to write about. Also get into the habit early of writing some new material at least once a week if you can. Good regular fresh content is key for driving traffic and making your site a success.

Blogging can be very fun and empowering. Good luck!

Find a webhost offering Cpanel + Fantastico and you can install WP easily. Then install a template. That's easy too.

Then call me ;)

Softaculous is normally what's used these days, with Fantastisco not offering as many scripts and not updating as frequently.

Softaculous is a great one click installer, very feature rich, can email you when updates are available if you like, and provides reviews and more all from within the application.

But yes, it takes all the hassle out of installing apps like Wordpress correctly. Some hosts like us even let you select it when you order so it'll be installed for you automatically without even having to use the one click installer.

one tip. if you plan to turn your website into a commercial entity somewhere down the road, don't opt for the .com version of WP. Got for the .org. Found that out the hard way.

Although we'd always recommend using your own self-hosted blog (WordPress.org), if you do happen to start with a free WordPress.com blog (as so many do), the transition doesn't have to be overly complicated - it's more often than not just a matter of exporting your content from one blog and importing it to another.

Change your login URL using .htaccess

This tip is awesome. It lets you use your url (or whatever you want) with a simple rewrite rule in your .htaccess. Big kudos to Jake Rocheleau for his nice page of developer snippets for this one. RewriteRule ^login$ your login url [NC,L]

I would suggest finding a template you like, installing an offline web server so you can play locally. I would suggest researching what the support is like on the theme you choose as I bought a nice one from themeforest.net for my site and whilst a nice looking theme the support wasnt very good as it's a one man band setup. Other templates I have used have been from the likes of studiopress who have support forum.
