Thought this was a doddle?

Maybe I did not give an I.T. guy in the past the credit he deserved but I thought what he did was pretty simple?

Today I rang a couple of places about creating an affiliate scheme.

needed

1. The ability to input a company url, generate their own link
2. Automation via paypal

Simple ?

This was very confusing for 2 companies and I am sure it should not be!

Do you want to create something like an 'Affiliate Networking Site' or 'Affiliate Programs Directory'?

And what do you mean by 'activate via PayPal'? People/user/businesses pay to [get/access what]?

If you explain a bit more, I might be able to help - I have implemented a few affiliate programs/sites.

What shopping cart are you using? There may be a plugin / module already created for it though

I'm a bit confused exactly what you want to do but, essentially, if you're looking to create an affiliate scheme or network then it's fairly easy depending on what you're ultimately looking for.

 

I want to create affiliate scheme, i described how it would work.. i.e. my banner can go in forums. (See top of page)

I thought this was about as obvious as it got?

Maybe not easy to actually do, but i SPOKE with two people who could not understand the concept!?

I would like to put my banner in other peoples forums please, I feel like i have had a bump on the head and I am not speaking English.

It seems to me that one of the biggest hurdles in getting work done by a supplier, particularly IT but others as well, is the inability of the customer to describe what they want (it's obvious) and of the supplier to ask the right questions to find out what they need to know. :redface:

What the above were trying to get too was, are you trying to advertise your product or service, or allowing others to promote theirs.

In general:
Joe has a website - he signs up as a publisher.

Brian wants to place ads on specific sites.

You bring the 2 together and pay Joe an affiliate percentage.

So you're looking at a banner/ ad serving system tied in with an affiliate scheme with built-in percentages/ payments etc.

Easy enough to do, if you know what you're doing, but it will take time, and therefore cash, to set up correctly.

AND so you know I ACTUALLY TOOK THE GUY TO AUTOTRADER.CO.UK to show him the frikkin links!!! AND then gave an analogy to him so imagine that I am the insurance company advertising on autotrader ok i would like to give people the opportunity to place a banner

Wow. Maybe firstly you should address your attitude and not treat people like the dirt off your shoe......maybe they will then understand you better.

 

I was using the forum to vent

I am perfectly pleasant when speaking to a professional person about business and have no problem articulating accurately what I mean.

The reason I posted was no more than frustration at the series of phone calls I had just endured.

Understand that 30mins of speaking to someone about this is a really REALLY long time for what should be 2mins followed by let me email you a price.

30mins, bearing in mind reading this takes a lot longer than having me explain it.

Lets hope today is better

That is banner advertising.

Affiliate promotion is where a third party has a unique reference that, when linked back to your website, tracks the origin back to the third party. The system then rewards them based on click through, new clients, registrations, sales etc.

Banners can use affiliate links, but, they are different.

If you have one of a large number of ecommerce systems, setting up an affiliate scheme can be quite simple. If you do not, it is a different ball game, as it will need to tie into your transaction system (assuming you reward on sales). This will not be cheap.

BTW, the description of what you want really wasn't clear enough and widened/changed, hence your IT peoples response and that excited posts in the topic! IT, like many other areas, needs a clear defined brief on what is required, not a line or two with the odd techie word!!

 

I freely admit I rambled on here about as I had blown a gasket and was simply venting not trying to describe a job for someone to do.

PLEASE remember we were speaking for 30mins.. that is a lot of talking!

I am sure this is about as clear as it can be, i was suffering a frustration meltdown by the time I had posted as I expected a 2 minute call followed by a price or the promise to email a price and move on.

The examples on autotrader.. understand, I am not going to detail bit by bit our call as it would take forever I was merely trying to highlight the ridiculousness of the situation where I actually had to take the I.T company guy to a website to say THIS is a banner advert! (Please think about this!)

I understand that want your sites banners on other peoples sites and that you want to give the site owners displaying your banner 15%. But this is just not enough for a developer to go and and quote you for what you require.

You have not explained how you want the system to be managed. ie, do the site owners signup on your site create there own accounts and provide you with their paypal account self service style.

Is the commission tiered? is the commission 15% of what? sub total, full total of order or something else.

How should visitors be tracked and for how long? if they place an order 30 days after the initial click does the owner still get the sale.

When is payment made to the site owner, do you need code in place for fraud checking and multiple affiliate tracking etc.

The developer will then take this information and source a product that matches your requirements the closest.
