Hello. As the title says I've spent quite some time thinking about starting a house clearance and waste removal business. It seems to me that although competitive it is a sector that is relatively recession proof and I don't think the need for that type of service is going to disappear anytime soon. I also think, as people become more environmentally aware and councils both clamp down on illegal tipping and encourage more sustainable waste disposal there might be room in the sector to build a fairly successful business. I'm keen to hear whether anyone on this sub either has experience in this sector and can offer any insight or has any general thoughts on starting up a business such as this. thanks in advance.

Setting yourself up is easy. Getting the various licenses to carry and dispose of waste isn’t complicated. Marketing will need a GBP and lots of social media promotion but all doable. Go get a van and the right insurance and talk to your local council about licensing.

Where there's muck there's brass as they say, do your sums check out the costs for getting licensed up, get advice on paper work, waste control notes etc. Certainly here council will not except "trade waste" at local recycling centres it all goes off somewhere else not cheap according to the builders and landscapers who have been working here over the last few weeks.

And don't talk to me about skip prices ........now that seems to be a good business to be in.

    Hi.

I have been in the game for a long time Personally I would not recommend it. I am not trying to put you off. I am just sharing with you my experiences. It's a very dicey game to operate in And it's full of hassle.

The market is saturated. You will be competing with fly tippers, people who will happily take the waste for as little as £50.00. It is very difficult even in 2024 to get the customer to understand the true price of waste removal. Many of your customers will think you are ripping them off even with a price, commercial tipping facility price list breakdown.

Very important you get commercial contracts, surviving on domestics alone can be a tricky avenue.

We are still at the age where many still think that is viable for a guy just to turn up in a transit van for £50 and dispose or a full load. Even with risks of £1000 fine.

I wish you luck in your endeavour and if you want to know any further information please contact me.

Sorting and separating the waste is paramount.
