I'm not sure why people follow back just because people follow them? If what they do is not relevant and I don't know them, I don't see the point?

I don't automatically follow everyone back either as I've been attracting loads of spammers and strange website links. I always check them out and make sure they're either relevant or at least twitter about stuff I'm interested in rather than just repeated links and nothing else.

I couldn't agree more with the sentiment that only follow those where there is relevancy. I am aware that some people play twitter just to get a high number of followers - but what's the point in that. Rather a relevant and targeted audience than to be ignored by the masses.
If I get followed, I always check them out - and if they 'fit' then I follow back - if they 'don't fit' I don't! If they look really relevant, then I tend to check out who they are following - and usually come across another few people that are relevant to follow (like attracts like and all that).
