I know it's not illegal (yet) to send invertebrates in the post, but it still seems wrong.

You're right, it is a pretty weird concept and selfish I think on the part of the collectors. Personally I wouldnt have any part in it, but DH justifies it to himself by pointing out that by breeding them the customers are buying captive bred individuals rather than those that have been ripped from the wild. Still doesnt totally justify it to me, but hey
