We are a nation of workaholics some of use get at ungodly hrs for work like 5:30am to 7am and dont start until 6am to 8am and dont finish until 5pm to 7pm hence people are tired by mid afternoon unable to concentrate or keep our eyes open

So do any of you or anybody for that matter take naps at work some US companies like google or even facebook allow staff to take naps for 20-30mins so would it make sense or does anybody take naps at work as people are tired and need to sleep to re-energise them selves

I would regardless of boss

The youth of today. No stamina.

You're not really cut out for work are you?

I say this because your other thread is looking at ways to bunk off too. Would you like to catch up on the omnibus edition of Eastenders whilst you're being paid?

They are on a wind up as their other post today was demanding that all firms give their staff unlimited access to the internet and free reign to do as they please with it during working hours.

Cat - napping is very productive and used by many great leaders

From an employer perspective the problem comes in policing it and establishing who is a hard-working cat napper and who is just lazy (or compensating for nights out clubbing)

Of course, most employers know, but it is difficult to prove.

Years ago I used to work for an accountant who always had a mid day nap.

It amazed me how he'd just sit in his chair and sleep.

He used to have a huge wind up alarm clock to wake him up after 30 minutes. Darn thing used to sound like a time bomb ticking away.

What was astounding was the way he could just switch off and sleep in the day in broad daylight upright in his chair.

I wouldnt like to sleep during the day at all I find a 1/2 hour lunchtime walk best - nice blast of fresh air works wonders:)

When I first started working for an accountant we always went to the pub at lunchtime!

Make sure you go back to the office with the last partner!

:D:D:D

Oh yes I've worked in practices where that was the norm too.

Taking a little nap even for at least 20 mins should be practiced and implemented in companies that are dealing with hard and heavy works. Employees as well as employers should have the great energy needed to have great performance.

Maybe, when I can run it more from the office than running around managing jobs ill be able to turn my phone off and have a nap. I'm able to sleek upright in a chair in the middle of the day, although usually only when I'm shattered, I doubt I could do it 'on demand' so to speak.

I used to work for a very large company, the boss of which used to kip for an hour every afternoon on the couch in his office. Worked for him.

Do it myself most days now, when I can at least. Find it highly re-energising. Helps me work the mad hours I do!

The taking a nap thing can be good for some people... However I doubt it would ever come into play in this country as being a requirement or something allowed for all staff... Directors are on the other hand entitled to do whatever they want, it's their company afterall... they've earned it which is why they have minions to do everything for them. :D

With that said though... I personally think that it would be impossible to have power naps in all businesses... I mean, staff would only complain because the phone was ringing and no one answered it. :D

My question is - how the hell do people nap for 20 mins?

I decide to have a 20 min nap, and 10 hours later I wake up, lol.

My old boss used to have a huge and extremly loud alarm clock...worked for him:)

Personally i think this topic could have a posotive and negative reaction. As some people work longer hours, so it should depend on the hours of work and the type of work you do that should determine wether a nap is required.

It has been said, as was said above about a 'siesta' in Spain, and in Australia the children finish early from school, then return later to carry on with the school day. Like ive said, i personally think it would depend on the kind of work you do and the amount of hours.

A guy i know that works in a fast passed/high pressure sales job done this 6 days a week for two months - then he collapsed in pain at work, went to the hospital ended up with stomach and kidney issues

If staff get an hour lunch break then that's the time for a 20 minute power nap. :D

Do you know that in Japan, taking naps at work is a sign for work dedication- you are tired=>you have been working hard :)

    Or

You are tired = You've spent to much time on Diablo III, CoD 4, WoW [insert any other game here] at night and only realised the time at 3am - leaving no commitment or dedication to your job by coming in to tired to do your job.

You deserve a smack on the nose and a melon shoved up your nostril for good measure.

animals and humans are designed to slow down in midday. Usually after lunch. your body temperature naturally changes which means your body clock preparing you for the sleep. when we are little, its normal to be napping at midday, when we`re older, its expected of us to work right through it. so even its natural to feel tired most of us just ignore it.
power nap would not work during lunch hour, as you need understanding of others not to disturb you when you want your nap.
I fully support power nap, personally I was able to after my lunch on most days and the difference is huge. Instead of yawning and senselessly glaring with heavy eyes on the computer screen I was fresh and more alert.
