Wow. I think since a week ago, I stopped getting junk mail in my inbox.

Anyone else experience this? I'm talking about the self hosted emails with your web host. I haven't done anything on my end.

I wonder if cpanel have done something to fix the spam recently, or have all the spam emails been coming from a certain server and the authorties took action.

IIRC someone investigated viagra scams and found that every single one of them ended up with a transaction through a bank in eastern europe. When authorities shut down the bank accounts of the criminals at that bank, all the viagra scams stopped.

    im getting a trickle now.

The Hull property investor spam that seems to have harvested emails from companies house data. Some services were matching the ltd company list to websites (such a duedil), and they seemed to have crawled these sites for the email to target business owners. Because they have the directors name and email. I get duplicate emails from all 3 mailboxes that are on my website.

Why do you publish an email address on your website? There are lots of ways obfuscate which means zero spam - nothing for the bots to harvest. Don’t have my website listed on CH either.

Are these the ones that come from 'steve@xxxxx' ?

I've stopped those now but it wasn't easy. They use no less than 36 different sending servers, each one properly set up with SPF and DKIM so they tend not to trigger filters. So I now block all their sending server's IP addresses at my firewall so they never get to connect.

If anyone is interested, and with permission of the mods. happy to publish that list of IP addresses to be added to blacklists.

Just be careful that you are not missing legitimate emails too.

If filters are too tight you may end up having emails blocked that you don't want blocked

Coming back to this subject I am still getting only the odd bit of spam (2 this week) coming through. I wonder if this is linked to the news this week that several hackers websites have vanished off the internet. Has the US lived up to its promise to take them down?

Are you self hosting or is your web host providing email hosting? It sounds like the latter, in which case there are things that your email host (your web host in this case) could have done. Even things as simple as greylisting can make a big difference, and if they are hosting email for a lot of users its worth doing the complicated stuff too.
