Stress!!

Alright all,

Am having one of them weeks (well fortnight really), and am quite stressed out.

Just woundering what everyone does to de-stress themselves.

Alcahol is one, but when the hangover kicks in things seem even worse:(

Football is a good de-stresser but again if the results not the right one then things seem worse.

Cheers

Switch off mobile phone, switch off television, switch off internet, switch off work, switch ON life with no interuptions, stresses, strains.

Take a walk (a good long one at that too) in the fresh air and reflect on the fact that there are so many people worse off than me.

Come home, nice cup of tea, switch everything back on.

Only problem is after a few hours, normal stress levels resume.

But hey, if anyone had a true lasting and effective method to relieve stress and could bottle it, they would be multi millionires. lol

kind regards

Robert Blake:)

To de-stress - sometimes like others have said, a good workout can work wonders.

Going out with friends and having a drink (not too many though!) and a chat can be good.

As a woman, I find a long soak in the bath is good, but I know guys don't necessarily go for that as much, but a hot shower can help too.

Or simply go and do something you enjoy to take your mind off things, a book, a movie - whatever you find relaxing. ;)

I'm a 'hot bath' chap -turn off all lights, spark a couple of candles, put something mellow on the CD player (Faithless does the job nicely) and relax for at least half hour before floating downstairs for dinner with the missus and an hour of chasing minimike.:)

I spend at least a hour a day relaxing - but more recently i have been ensuring I spend time with loved ones.

Its amazing how much relaxation can be had with nothing but a cuddle and a chat with my better half - and this is coming from a man!

2 hours in the gym and 2 hours with my chick usually does the trick for me , external factors like 99% of the human race being morons is what usually causes the stress in the first place.

I shall digress.......

on the phone to 3 broadband ( india of course ) , had some problems with lloyds tsb and had cancelled my direct debit so had 2 months o/s payments , no problem paid the balance, then I enquired as to the possibility of paying the rest of the contract in one go so that I wouldnt have to worry about future payments.

Their was a long pause and then she told me I could do that but because I wasnt paying by direct debit their would be a £4 a month charge levied to the account even though I didnt owe any money and their was nothing coming out of my bank , I said that was ridiculous and the woman agreed , but their was no point in arguing , I am just gonna go into carphone warehouse where i got the thing and see if they can help me .

Stupid or what!!

To help with stress, I usually find a 10-20 minute walk helps.

The gym does help as well, I recently started going to the gym, and there is a noticeable difference. It just seems like I have more time all of a sudden :D

Also, drink plenty of water - my tap water tastes horrid, so I buy bottled water - well worth it though!

Yay! Men who like baths seem to be a rare breed! :D But they are very relaxing :D

Are you a big coffee and cola drinker?, I find cutting back on the cafeine cuts stress levels for me.
That's another good point. Also the way you eat can effect your stress levels. Eating vegetables, meat and fish not only help with healthiness, they improve concetration levels - fish is particularly good. :)

Personally:

1. Disconnect (phones, pagers, gooseberries, everything)

2. Get out recipe books

3. Spend some serious quality time in the kitchen!

I'm lucky in that i dont tend to get stressed but believe that by meeting issues head on and dealing with them as they occur helps me keep relaxed.

Many people who get stressed reaction is to avoid the thing that might be causing it hoping it will go away. Generally it wont and all your doing is worsening the situation and increasing the stress through fear of the unknown.

Also agree that exercise and a change in environment can help.

yep, I've been stressed for 3 days now so today I had a bonfire and then my 2 boys came up to the fire and we made small spears and then put sausages on them and cooked them. After 25 mins we were all messing around and the weight was off my shoulders.
You do need to have a walk and step outside and also step away from the problem - all will seem clearer and your decisions are normally better.

For a quick fix when you are sat at your desk, one that was suggested to me via my father, who is taught it to stop his angina attacks quicker is this one, and its so simple its silly!

Breath in for three seconds then exhale for 5 seconds ... you will feel one muscle group untense, try it again, then more muscles start to relax and carry on until you feel totally relaxed!

It does work ... and its good for panic attacks too!

Breathing exercises are great! I suffer from panic attacks, and my doctor taught me about something called "square breathing" where you inhale for 2 seconds, hold for two seconds, exhale for two seconds and rest for two seconds, and you do it for two minutes - it works really well.

I tried yoga also - but that is too slow for me lol! I prefer a faster workout to combat stress, yoga didn't relax me at all though I know some people who swear by it. :)

My advice is go for a run.

Running is brilliant, you can do it whenever you want, wherever you want, it's free, gets you fit, clears your head and makes you feel full of energy.

It you want time to yourself to mull things over in your head then a nice leisurely plod around a lake is great, on the other head if you want to completely clear your head and forget about everything then sticking the mp3 on full and sprinting with no destination at all seems to do the trick.

I can't think of a downside to running at all.

Breathing exercises are best for me. Try this:

Close your eyes
Breath as slow and deep as you comfortably can
Become very aware of the coolness of the air as you breath in - and the warmth or the air you breath out
Imagine your stress has a colour and every time you breath out you are breathing out that 'stress' colour
Imagine that the air you breath in has a colour that is totally stress free.
Do this for at least five minutes

One word of warning, you might get so relaxed you fall off your chair! This is a relaxation routine used as a destress exercise before using hypnosis.

Coffee a major prob and i know i have to cut down, though thats easier said than done.

Right im off 4a jog, then have fish fingers, followed by a bath and some breathing exercise:D.

Seriously though the breathing thing seems good.

I'd like to say that I think using alcohol is a REALLY bad way to deal with stress.

I used to do that and found myself drinking more and more to the point that I had a problem. Now I just numb my brain with my favourite crime dramas (god bless ITV3!) 2 hours of Morse and I can't remember what I was stressed about in the first place

Haha that can stress some people. LOL. Ok different things help different people, but this seems the general consensus,

- Stress needs to be worked off in some cases. SO good excercise will work wonders. A good loud bit of music and just letting it go can help

- Baths with bubbles... mmm. Nice hot chocy, get a break, try and focus on the good rather then the bad

- Talking helps, a problem shared is a problem halved.

I've been reading the thread and noticed no one has mentioned the benefits of aromatherapy for stress.
My suggestion if you're feeling is stress is firstly get away from the problem that is causing the stress a brisk 15 min walk helps blow the cobwebs away for me!
Then when you get back home light some scented candles or burn simmering granules in an oil burner Eg Lavender or DeStress fragrance along with some nice soothing music in the background.
If you are having a nice relaxing bath add a few drops of calming Lavender essential oil to your bath or another aromatherapy pre-blended bath oil or even a pampering bath bomb and let your stress levels melt away :)
Ultimately, book yourself in for a body massage which is one of the best stress relievers there is or buy a massage oil to share with your other half for even more fun!

Hope this helps a few people :)

I am super sceptical of anything "alternative" but 2 weeks ago my mother in law (she who must be obeyed) booked me for a reiki session. Didn't even know what it was (it's a bit like "the force" in star wars just without light sabres). Anyway I came away in what can only be described as a dazed state...however my energy levels and general positveness are at an all time high so there may be something in it, I would now recomend it.
Have a great weekend
