Staff reluctant to drive to internal meeting 1.5 miles away because of no business insurance on car!

The issue is the common loss of business use, and the change in interpretation. I share my building with an insurance office. The boss drives to the post office every day with post because out of three staff, only he has insurance. His two staff cannot take the post. It’s not the employees being awkward, it’s the policy wording. He says so many companies changed during lockdown when everyone started delivering food. If you are going to a work event outside where you normally work, you should check you are insured. Not for your boss but for your car. Write it off on the way and they wont pay up. Worse, cause an accident and you will be an uninsured driver, with all the hassle that will generate.

And god help you if you knock someone down in the process of trying to save a few quid ..... something you will live with for the rest of your life.

I find this pathetic by your employees and maybe shows an underlying lack of motivation, morale and teamwork. An offsite meeting could be paid by taxi or letting them claim the government allowance of 45p per mile for business mileage on their expenses.

Charge them for their teas, coffees & biscuits at the meetings ! lol Miserable people.
Please try to understand. If they can claim the government allowance (either as a tax offset or from their employer) it IS business mileage and the cars must be insured.

I still can't get my head around this?

I have a parcel, a small packet to take to Parcelforce. I take the family car (now uninsured as using for business) as the missus who work's 500 yds from the PF depot needs picking up, along with our daughter and a friend/work colleague. They won't all fit in the van!

I drop the parcel off, (now insured as driving for social, domestic, pleasure) pick them up and the work colleague has been asked by her boss to drop some business mail off at the nearby Post Office, (now insured for S,D,P but not for business) so we take a 200 yd detour before taking her home.

This may happen once a year, or not at all. How do I begin to level this with the insurance company?

What addition to the policy should I be asking for?

Business, not hire and reward or delivery. It will probably be free.

.......am I not delivering the package to Parcelforce?
You are not doing it for hire or reward.

I used to visit recruitment client's on a motorcycle and took CV's with me, I also used to do some of the xmas wine runs by bike (for those clustered in a single area i would take the car and hit a bunch).

I explained that to my insurer and was told class 1 business use was fine, it cost me nothing extra but slightly reduced the number of options of underwriter come renewal time.

As the ones not able to cover class1 also wouldn't cover pillions and/or 3rd party cover on other bikes that didnt actually cause me an issue

As always. talk to your insurer. Tell them what how you plan to use your vehicle and they will tell you if you are covered.

What if my wife picks me up from work and I have a box to go to Parcelforce. Is she uninsured when taking me?
Ask your insurer. Our policy covers us for business use. Yours may not.

Well after 5 pages of comments I thought I’d better conclude this. We had the meeting. Arranged a taxi for the employees who were worried about insurance. No cucumbers were harmed.
    Thanks for the update.
