A lot of onsite SEO is about the content, navigation, trustmarks and structure.

As long as you have full control over all this the platform you use shouldn't matter.

It's when you move onto the technical SEO things can unwravel. If you want your site to have optimal performance you need to do a lot of tinkering under the hood. This is where a standalone site can work to you advantage. The likes of Shopify and Squarespace or any other site builder wont let you fiddle with the server settings, core code and zillion an one other elements you need to adjust.

Consider also that high performing sites are now moving towards a headless CMS. This is where the CMS is back end only and the content is served as static pages. Which makes it lightning fast. Technology is moving on so if you are serious about SEO you won't be using WordPress or a site builder in the future.

Is there any evidence to say that SquareSpace websites don't rank as well as say Wordpress or something else?
.

You should use the platform that suits you best, be that squarespace, shopify or whatever. A solution that's designed to suit all manner of usage is never going to be ideal but unless you have the resources to manage your own custom solution you have to compromise somewhere.

Lots of people use wordpress but you'll rarely see an example that's well optimized, same goes for most other options.

This is interesting, can you point me in the direction of some sites that have gone this route?

BBC, Apple, NASA, Sky News and others.

There is a big movement towards JS rendered sites using tools like gastby: https://www.gatsbyjs.org/

Wordpress (with it's clunky new Gutenberg editor) and other site builders will be left behind. It's not going to happen overnight but over time the way content is delivered is going to change.

Everything in the CMS will be the same - it's how the content is delivered from the server that changes.
