Spin class ( indoor cycling ) gym based

Hi all,

over the past few months I've had a slight change in my job, I have taken a spin class course or indoor cycling

So I have been hiring the local spin studio, but numbers are very low

I get the studio for free and we share the bikes 50/50 there are 26 bikes

I then teach the class for free and my wages is from the non members i bring in to the club to take part in the class, I charge them £ 4.00 per person

However I only get 2 or 3 people from non members so £ 8 or £ 12 pound

I have run groupon deals and living social and kgb, wowcher, they run ok selling around 30-50 deals, this pays for me to do the class

My question is how to attract new people to my class, and keep them

Or is it just a hit and miss kind of trade with people dropping in and out

Adrian
Thanks

Are you teaching pure Spinning?

Are you doing aeribics on a bike?

Or are you adding another real value?

It all makes a difference.

Whichever, it takes time to build a loyal following, but I currently attend courses run by instructors who have one Iron Man which have built a very loyal following, whilst those who do aerobics on a bike are very hit & miss.

Get payment upfront as you willbe consistently 30% over booked

I pay over £100 a month for my gym and if I wanted to go to a spin class, I'd expect it to be included in my monthly fee. If I were paying £25 a month, I might expect fewer inclusive items.

I think one problem will be that you may be converting non members into members who then get their spin classes for "free". If I was paying you £8 a week or around £35 a month, I might sign on for the whole package. Do you get a cut of any sign ups ?

Your problem is your business model, teaching a class for free in someone elses gym is madness.

IMO goto a few ladies fitness classes and ask how tey run their businesses.

Hi TotallySport, Thanks for you input, the reason I use the gym, and I know it's risky, is that it's for free, other gym charge £ 25.00 per hour or community centers £ 10-20 per hour, so its a cost thing,

Also these Spin bike are around £200.00 each so I thought getting them for free to use 2 a week was a bonus

The first thing you need to know is how much commission the regular staff are on to sign up new members. As you don't get a salary, you should be looking for around the same deal (I doubt you will get better but I would think about it).

You mention your "deal". Do you do other classes at the gym ?

How much is monthly membership ?

would expect there to be two options:

1, use a gym with bikes, pay the fee for the renting the gym and equipment, and charge for the lesses, if the rent is £25 per hour and the class is 1 hour long, you only need 7 people to break even, at £4 per person.

2, Get the gym to pay you £18 per hour, let them worry about the people who attend etc.

Number two is the safe version.

Bloody hell, that is cheap.

What about the classes being chargeable and you split the money with the gym ?

No that wouldn't work as gym members come and go in and out of the classes as they please, plus the gym will not handle cash for me

I've tried to hire venues like church halls, the £ 10.00 per hour rooms are not to bad I make a little, but at £ 25.00 per hour I lose money, although the room is full 15-20 people, but there all voucher deal people, so I have lots of people attending the class, but no cash

Sounds to me like the gym have got a free member of staff and membership recruiter!

My daughter is a swim coach, freelance if you like, the gyms pay her £18 - £26 per hour to take classes and/or coach one to one. She doesn't have to find and fund the lessons, you should surely be looking for similar?

Hi Banned, yes I also have a number of classes where I'm paid from £ 18.00 - £ 30.00 per classes per hour,

As a business person for the past 10 years, my idea was to rent there space and walk away with more than just an hourly rate,

So contact details of members attending my classes so I can offer them other offers, weekday retreats weekend breaks, hair and nails ect

However numbers are just too low, to make it work

apart from the deal websites bringing in sales
